Signing at Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival This Weekend!

Hey, who's the brunette?!
A couple weeks ago, I asked if any of you would be attending the New York Sheep & Wool Festival. Apparently the answer is yes! (I also learned that those "in the know" just call it "Rhinebeck." Good insider tip for a newb like me!)

Anyway! I will be doing two book signings on Saturday, the 19th in the Merritt Books signing area in Building B. Come by from noon to 1:00 pm or 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Hope to see you there!

P.S. Want to win a copy of my book at the festival? There's a social media contest going on. Post (to Instagram or Twitter) a photo of a new craft project you're working on by Thursday the 17th for a chance to win a copy of Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing at the STC Craft table. Be sure to tag it with @sewgertiesew (Twitter) or @gertie18 (Instagram) and use hashtag #sheepandwoolNY. (Are you reading? If so, you totally deserve a free book!)

Are You Going to the Sheep and Wool Festival?

I've only heard good things about the Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY, but I've never been. However, it's right up my alley: farm animals and fibers! I know it's more of a knitting thing (which I also enjoy), but there's stuff for sewing enthusiasts too. For instance, the famed Make It with Wool Contest.

Anyway! It's located right in my county, and I'm finally going to check it out this year. It's the weekend of October 19th. My publisher will be there (with my book!) and I'd love to hear if any of you readers will be there. Perhaps we can even have a meet up of sorts!

Attendees, please comment and let me know if you'll be there on Saturday the 19th or Sunday the 20th. Hope to see you there!

Commenting Systems + 30% Off Fabric Sale

A Rosie pic for the dog people out there!
With my blog redesign well underway, a few of you have asked for a new commenting system. No one likes having to enter those ridiculous (and unintelligible) recaptcha phrases, obviously--the ones that prove you're not a robot. I experimented with not requiring a word verification, but I was seriously inundated with spam comments--like hundreds a day. That won't do, either.

A few of you have recommended switching my commenting system to Disqus. Before I jump into that head first, any thoughts? What are your experiences with Disqus, either as a commenter or a blogger?

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in. Reading your comments is one of my favorite things ever, so this is really important to me!

In other news, my remaining summer fabrics in my shop are now 30% off! Woo hoo!

Blog Changes A-Comin' + New Fabric + Blouse Class

Black floral linen
Hello, readers! Big news: I'm finally making some design changes to the blog, as posted here. It will be a template update to make the content easier to navigate--plus a cute new look too. A generous reader named Rachel Kate totally did all the work for me; more about that to come. Anyway, I'm letting you know ahead of time since things will be in transition for a little while. There may be some little issues here and there, but it will all result in a more organized site. Yay!

Upcoming Events in California and Ann Arbor, MI!

Happy New Year, readers! Now that 2013 is here, it's time to look towards some upcoming fun. I have two trips planned for this month. Perhaps I'm coming to your neck of the woods and we can meet in person?

  • Anaheim, CA! I'll be there for the Craft and Hobby Association winter conference on Saturday, January 12th. I'll be there with Butterick (who is the fabulous publisher of my line "Patterns by Gertie"). Butterick is celebrating their 150th anniversary (did you know that Ebenezer Butterick, the company's founder, created the first graded home sewing pattern in 1863?). I'll be doing a book signing in their booth.

  • On to Los AngelesSew L.A. is throwing me a party on Sunday, January 13th! (Click image above for details.) They've gone all out, with a retro picnic theme and a makeup artist to do vintage looks. It only sounds like the best party ever, so I hope you will be there.
  • I'll then be spending a couple days in the L.A. area and I want to do it up right! I'll definitely be visiting the What Katie Did Hollywood boutique and some vintage shops; let me know if you have other suggestions for my must-visit list.
  • Ann Arbor, MI! On Sunday, January 27th, I'm honored to be speaking at the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor Public Library. Book signing to follow. See details here

Holiday Break

via Pinterest
Hello, readers! I'm writing to you from Virginia, where Jeff and I are visiting his family. I'm engaging in very important activities like eating cookies and taking naps. I've decided to declare a blogging break until the New Year to more effectively engage in these activities.

(When I'm back, I think I need to make a big red circle skirt and polka dot top, like in the adorable vintage card above. Isn't it the best Christmas outfit ever?)

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

A Blog Makeover?

Dude, where did the week go? Aside from organizing my sewing room, I've also been working on my final collection for my millinery class, which has been incredibly gratifying, creativity-wise. More to come on that front, of course.

While we're in a bit of a sewing lull here, I wanted to ask you, dear readers, your opinion on a matter of blogginess (blogitude?). I'm planning an overhaul of this site, one that I think is long overdue. The goal will be to make the whole thing more navigatable (yup, coining new words is my thang today) and visually pleasing. There are 1,083 articles on this site, and no great way to find one's way around them. I'm most excited to be able to catalog my tutorials and sew-alongs in an user-friendly way. There could be other exciting components, like forums and a page specifically for my book.

Frankly, what I'm talking about is a transition to a website with a blog as its main content. I sometimes hate change, so this is a little terrifying to me. I'll always consider myself a blogger first, so I would never want the focus to stray from that.

The fun part will be the design! I like the look of my blog as it is, but we can all use a little makeover now and then (pink hair, anyone?). The design and illustrations of my book are a guiding force for me here: quirkily, elegantly vintage.

As readers, how would you like to see the site improve? I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your feedback!

P.S. In small changes, I've added social media/email icons at the top left of the homepage so you can find me elsewhere in the ether. Also, directly below the icons is a "search this blog" widget that will help you find old posts if you wish. Fun fact: the search terms "tailoring" and "cat" both get 8 pages of hits. Hmm.

Dude, We Bought a House.

Life changes are afoot! Jeff and I have been in the process of buying, um, a house. We closed on it yesterday, and then we bought a car for good measure! We're moving to Beacon, NY, as of next week. I'm a little overwhelmed right now and not really in the best blogging state of mind, so things may be a bit quiet here.

My plans for the next couple weeks consist of: 1) staying sane while packing up our little Queens apartment, 2) sewing curtains and pillows with the garment fabrics I have on hand, 3) purchasing the washer/dryer of my dreams, and 4) blogging as much (or as little) as I can.

Things are changing, but not too much. I'll still be here, and I'll still be teaching at The Sewing Studio in New York City. (Want to help a girl pay her mortgage? I still offer private lessons!) When I set up my new studio in the new house, I'll be back to sewing my usual stuff.

Readers, I'm so excited. Jeff and I have wanted this for a while. And it's happening! Thank for your support; it means the world to me to get your nice comments and emails every day.

P.S. The cats have no idea what's in store for them.

Almost a Book

Look! It's starting to resemble a book. Here's a little peek at the first pass of my book, which means it's the first time I've seen it all put together and illustrated and designed. It's quite a rush! It's no where near finished, though. I have to review the whole thing by tomorrow and make any corrections and edits.

I have a lot of work ahead of me in the next couple days, so I hope you'll understand if the blog is  light on posts this week. (Plus it's Thanksgiving here in the U.S.! And Jeff and I are going on a little romantic mini-break!)

I may have a finished coat to show you in the next few days, though. Reader Cindy came to my aid on the lining issue--she had some of that charmeuse in her stash and gave me some! Isn't that the nicest thing you've ever heard? Anyway, I just have to hem the lining and sew on the buttons and it will be done.

Thanks for hanging in there while I've been working on the book, readers. You are the best. It will all be worth it, I promise!

What are you all up to this week?

A Day in My Life

Kitties! Peanut butter and honey sandwiches! Hanging out in your jammies all morning! Does it get any more glamorous?

I wrote a lengthy post for Tilly for her "Day in the Life Series" in which she features ladies who make their living in the sewing world. I hope you'll pop by and read it! (That's British for click here.)

Also, I have a new post up at the STC Craft blog where I talk about the new Oliver + S book. Don't you all just love their patterns? I don't really have opportunity to use them (unless I made a Sailboat outfit for Henry! Hey, that's not a bad idea . . .)

Anyway! The post is about ways we vintage-loving seamstresses can find inspiration for ourselves from the fabulous Oliver + S Little Things to Sew.

Okay, I have to get back to my very important task of drinking coffee in my pajamas and petting Henry.

Anyone Heading to the American Sewing Expo?

Hello friends! I'm packing my bags to head to ASE in the morning, where I'll be competing in Passion for Fashion. (Wish me luck!) Starting Friday morning, I'll be deep in the Project Runway-style competition (though hopefully not behaving in the Project Runway style--you know, throwing hissy fits and breaking down from sleep deprivation and an inflated ego). But tomorrow night I'll have a bit of free time, and it got me thinking . . . anyone up for dinner or a glass of something festive? E-mail me if you are!

Packing for this thing is nerve-wracking. Unlike a certain reality TV show, you're allowed to bring your own fusibles, zippers, etc  . . . and one pattern drafting book. Oh the pressure to decide which one! I decided on Design Your Own Dress Patterns by Adele P. Margolis since my copy has prestigious roots, which must make it lucky, right?

We contestants will get our secret challenge Friday morning, shop for fabric at the show, and then sew all day Friday and Saturday, on the expo floor where attendees can watch (!). The garments will be presented and judged at a fashion show Saturday night. Oh the excitement! And the anxiety, too. Will I choke under the pressure? Burn a hole in my garment? I suppose we shall see. I will report back as soon as possible!

The blog will likely stay pretty quiet until I'm back next week. I have some fun coat and bombshell dress posts planned. Until then--hope to see you in Novi!

P.S. The last step of my skirt sew-along posts is up at BurdaStyle!

Doings Around the Internet

Hi readers! A couple quick things to note:

  • The Stitch Magic Stitch-Along culminated with a post on smocking. Guys, I actually tried smocking! I made a mess of the right and wrong sides (hence all the weird dots on the sample below), but I still think it looks pretty cool. And that's not all! I'll have an interview with Stitch Magic author Alison Reid this week, so look out for that.

  • I'm leading a beginner's sew-along on BurdaStyle in honor of National Sewing Month. Do you like my official graphic, above? I love how dorky I look in that photo. The project is a cute skirt with front pleats and you can go read the first and second posts. I'm really enjoying this one. I've never done pleats with underlays, so I'm getting that under my belt (so to speak, haha). And even though I didn't pick out the skirt pattern, I'm loving how it's turning out! The underlays give it a bit of vintage-y fullness that's really cute. I can't wait to pair it with my kicky green clogs and take it for a whirl on the town.
That's all for now, friends. Hope to see you all over the sewing blogosphere!

Guest Posts Galore

It so happens that I have two guest posts out in the interwebs today.

First, check out the inaugural post of my new weekly series on the STC Craft blog. I'm doing some freelance editing work on their sewing books, and they asked me to contribute to their blog as well! I have the best job.

Second, remember when I asked for your submissions on the one dress you'd kill to have a pattern for? My post is up today at Sew, Mama, Sew! See which three dress submissions I chose. And thanks to all who gave input!

Wordy Wednesday

Hello friends! There's a problem with Blogger right now and no images can be uploaded. Hence, part two of the shirring tutorial is delayed until further notice. But I will tell you things with my words instead!

Now seems like a good time to let you know that my TV debut is happening next week on PBS; Threads did a great post on it here. It's Sew Easy is set to premiere on June 30th.  My session is the first one of the first show!

If you don't see the show on your local PBS listings, you can contact them and ask them to include it in their programming. It would be much appreciated!

I'll be back (hopefully with pretty pictures) tomorrow.

Join My Mailing List, If You Please!

Happy Friday, readers! I've been mostly MIA around these parts lately, and I'm just sort of easing back into blogging--and back into real life. Sunday night through Wednesday was spent filming my online course, which will be offered at Craftsy.com and will be available in about a month. The course will be called "The Perfect Fit Bombshell Dress" and it will show you step-by-step how to create a 50s style sarong dress with a molded bust, boned bodice, waist stay, and convertible straps! Think Alfred Shaheen; think Dorothy Lamour. I'm super excited about it.

There are going to be special discounts on this course for readers, so I'm compiling a mailing list to keep you updated. I will also use this mailing list to update you on my teaching schedule at The Sewing Studio here in New York, as well as on the release of any of my sewing writing that gets published. Don't worry, I won't overwhelm you with e-mails!

Please fill out the form below if you're interested in joining the mailing list. And let me know if you have any questions!

Gertie's Week in Review {5.14.11}

I'm back! The Great Blogger Outage of '11 (as it shall henceforth be known) threw a wrench into my weekly posting schedule. For those who don't know, the outage put Blogger into a read-only mode (no posting or commenting) and temporarily removed anything posted since Wednesday. Those posts are now back, but the comments are not. I hear that they'll be restored shortly.

The Great Blogger Outage of '11 really got me thinking. First, I was frustrated. I took to Twitter to talk about migrating to Wordpress. After some thinking, I realized that I needed to put things into perspective. The outage lasted 20.5 hours, which is a long time in internet time, but a short time in the real world. Mostly I was just thrown off guard, and this resulted in me skipping 3 posts that I would have normally done. It also messed with some of my sponsors' ads, which I take seriously. But other than that . . . it really isn't a big deal. So, a reality check was taken.

Which all brings me to the topic of frequency of posting and basically, the future of this blog. As you've noticed, the introduction of The Daily Dress has me now posting twice a day during the week, and the feature you're reading now is my one weekend post. A commenter recently said she thought I was posting too much, and that she would probably unsubscribe. I guess I understand that. But the truth is, I take my future as a blogger and writer quite seriously, and I've always hoped to grow this site into something bigger: a daily blog with more interactive components. I love to write about sewing, but I also love to write about fashion, pop culture, feminism, and body image—all filtered through the lens of someone who makes her own clothes. I guess I will have to accept that I will lose some readers who bemoan that my writing isn't strictly focused on sewing technique all the time. (Sniff.) I am quite sensitive by nature, so this acceptance is a bit difficult at times!

How does this all relate to the Week in Review? Well, this week I was able to put into motion some major life changes that will allow me to focus much more time on my "online presence," as they say. I can't really go into specifics yet, but I will spill all the details in time. This will result in some changes to the blog (and yes, probably the Wordpress migration that I threatened earlier) that will bring you all more sewing tutorials, content, and community.

So it was an exciting week at Chez Gertie. I'm looking forward to the changes that the future holds, since they will allow me to follow my passion more fully. And I'm looking forward to having you all along for the ride. As always, thanks for reading!

Gertie's Week in Review {4.23.11}

Readers, as I've become more consumed with working on my book, I feel like there's a little less of my daily doings on my blog. As you may have noticed, I've had to switch the focus here to more general information-based posts rather than updates on current projects. And this has all resulted in me feeling like there's a little less of me on the blog. Now, for some of you, this may be a plus! But for me, it feels like I miss chatting with my best sewing buddies. Hence, the idea for "Gertie's Week in Review" was born. Here I'll give you some Doogie Howser-style reflections on daily life. Here we go!

The sewing machine has been quite busy this week. I spent several days working on the pencil skirt that will be in my book. My time at Susan Khalje's couture sewing school really inspired me to make each piece very special, so this one has a silk organza underlining, a hand-picked lapped zipper, and a high waistband with boning. However, the book instructions give you the basics of construction and then there are sidebars on how to up your game if you're ready for the next level.

Mid-week, I had to switch my focus. Have you all seen the Common Thread project that's going on at The Sew Weekly? Mena had many yards of a delicate ivory vintage lace that she sent out to seven sewing bloggers to make a creation in which the lace is used. I'm honored to be finishing up the series next week. There have been many amazing creations from this lace, which you should definitely check out. I spent a lot of time agonizing over what to make, and then it suddenly came to me mid-week. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but I can tell you that I draped the pattern myself and it's inspired by a costume worn by one of Hollywood's most beloved starlets—of all time.

Today is a rainy day here in Queens and I'm finishing up that project, and later going to get my hair done. I've decided I want my bangs to be a little more dramatic, in the u-shape that was popularized by non other than Bettie Page. I'm bringing along this picture of Gretchen Mol playing Bettie.

Later on, Jeff and I have a date at a new restaurant in the neighborhood that has a very old-school vibe. Perfect for showing off a new 'do!

In terms of blogging, this week has been a good one. I am really enjoying writing The Daily Dress, perhaps more than any other feature. Which is ironic, because some of you have been quite vocal in hating it! I hope you'll continue to give it a chance. Like anything else, it's a process. I'm working on the voice and style of it, and trying to make it as sewing-focused as possible by adding patterns and pondering construction techniques used on the dresses.

The granny panty discussion was quite spirited and fun, wasn't it? I was pleased that the post got picked up by Jezebel, my favorite ladyblog of all time. I joked to Jeff that I'm going to become known as that granny panties lady from now on. (Kind of like Elizabeth Banks in Zac and Miri Make a Porno. Anyone else see that?)

Well, I suppose that's it for now. I feel much better now that we've had a good chat. What's been going on with you, readers?

The Daily Dress: Immodesty Blaize

Look, a new blog feature! This is an idea I've been cooking up for a while, and there's clearly no better time to launch a new venture than April Fool's Day. I love looking at red carpet and PR photos, even if I have no clue what the event is. (Heard of the "Triumph Inspiration Awards," anyone?) We all know that most celebs will attend the opening of an envelope if it means they'll get their picture taken, and that means . . . DRESSES!

In the interest of building this site into a place where you can waste even more time online, I'll regularly be posting hot-off-the-presses dress photos from fashion shows, red carpets, and publicity events, no matter how insignificant or gauche.

Today's edition of The Daily Dress features burlesque performer Immodesty Blaize at the Inspiration Triumph Awards in London. Don't you love the vintage silhouette, sheer embroidered fabric, scalloped edge, and use of a sheer underlining?
At the after party, she changed into something a little more dramatic.

Gotta love burlesque performers.

Anyhoo, welcome to The Daily Dress! I hope you will feel free to share your thoughts (fawning, snarky, thoughtful, whatever) on the dresses featured. Update! I should have specified that this new feature is in addition to regular sewing posting, not in lieu of it. Yay!

Announcing My Television Debut!

Hey, remember my little secret trip a few weeks ago? I can now reveal my mysterious whereabouts! I was actually traveling to Cleveland to be on the new PBS show It's Sew Easy! I won the spot after entering the BurdaStyle talent search (see my audition here). I have a guest post on the BurdaStyle blog today giving a behind-the-scenes peek at my experience; I hope you'll swing by and give it a read. The show will air sometime this summer. I'll keep you updated!

Writing a Book Is Hard

Well, that title probably says it all. I'm in the thick of writing the fitting chapter for my book, and it's proven to be the most challenging chapter yet—even more so than the 70-page technique chapter! I've always thought there should be an intuitive way to approach fitting. But this chapter has just shown me that there are so many different ways to write about fitting. I hope I find one that works.

I spent a weekend traveling with my editor recently and we laughed about what a huge project this book has become. When I met with some other publishers early on, they seemed overwhelmed by the scope of the book and suggested that I cut it down considerably. But Melanie was the exact opposite—she suggested that I make the scope bigger! I think I knew I'd found a kindred spirit then.

Anyway, this is all kind of a roundabout way of saying that I'm going to take this week off blogging to focus on my book. I know how much we all struggle with fitting, so I feel a huge responsibility to get this chapter right!

Have a fab week, and keep your eye out for good cat videos to share. Better yet, record one of your own! Pip is weirdly photogenic, so I figure it's only a matter of time before we have a viral hit on our hands. (She's still working on her people skills, though.)

If you're interested in watching a cat chew his toes, Henry's your man.

Yep, we'll definitely be recording that viral YouTube sensation any day now.
