Tie them in the back in a bow, and you get a nice clean finish in the front.
And you can also wear the wrap underneath the breasts or on top. Change it up and see how you like it! The top has a soft structure to it, and different folds and gathers will be created depending on how you wear it.I'm wearing a chiffon petticoat in these photos, and I also added a lining to the skirt.
The skirt has double box pleats, which gives it extra fullness.
To add a lining to this skirt, it's a good idea to fold in the pleats on the pattern tissue before cutting. That way, you don't have to deal with the bulk of the pleats on the lining. Just overlap the tissue so the pleat lines meet and pin in place.
I stitched a cute lavender and white lace trim to the lining.
In true Gertie fashion, I had to buy special shoes for the outfit. These purple suede heels are a perfect match for the sateen.
But they'll also go with my purple pom pom skirt and the purple roses jersey I'm making the wrap top in for the sew-along. Gosh, I'm so practical!
Nice job! You know, I really really miss your purple hair. It so suits you.
ReplyDeleteThanks! That's funny, I don't miss the purple or pink or blue hair like I thought I would. But it was fun while it lasted!
DeleteI wasn't captured by the pattern cover but gosh, I really like this version of the pieces! Those double box pleats are really glam. Are you wearing a waist cincher? Your waist look so tiny!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you like it! I really wanted to show it with a totally different vibe. Yep, totally wearing a waist cincher--it really helps get that 50s hourglass!
DeleteYou have convinced me, somehow, that I need yet another skirt pattern... :)
DeleteLove this pattern, it's a must have in my collection. You look so pretty.
ReplyDeleteSuch cute outfits! I didn't think some of the muted colors in the floral sateen would suit me in a dress, but a skirt would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI have an opposite opinion to the comment above, I think you look lovely with brown hair again, and it really goes better with a lot of your outfits. And this is coming from someone who has always wanted purple, pink or blue hair!
Dee
I LOVE this outfit in these fabrics. Now I'm really excited about making mine!
ReplyDeleteI realize that this is a weirdly personal question, but what kind of bra are you wearing? It looks like it has less of a "massive globe" shape than most bras do these days. I'm currently on the hunt for a bra that would give me a 1940's-sh profile (perky, but not as pointy as 50s cone bra), so this question is for personal research and not some sort of creepy curiosity, I promise! ;-)
Haha no worries! The funny thing is that the bra I'm wearing is this unlabeled soft bra that my friend passed on to me. It's kind of like those Coobie bras but it has pads inside that are pretty stiff and slightly pointed. I'll ask my friend where she got it! I know what you're talking about with the shape you're going for. Have you tried the Bali Flower or Wacoal Retro Chic? They're both underwire seamed bras that give a good "sweater girl" shape without being overly bullet-y.
DeleteThank you for your reply! I've just read through some online reviews for both of the bras you referenced, and they definitely sound like what I'm looking for. Thanks again!
DeleteNice outfit, Gerthie! Shoes are gorgeous, and you totally needed them, hehe... but the question is, are those the most coherent with the 50s look? although a jersey top is not coherent for a 50s outfit neither... are we in front of the new 50s??? The 2050s? The XXIst century 50s? the 50s revisited?? haha..
ReplyDeleteOf course I needed them! ;) Speaking of era-appropriateness, I discovered that jersey tops were very common in the '50s. Wool jersey was especially prevalent. My understanding is that the jersey of the period was much more stable and thick than what we're used to though--no spandex yet!
DeleteOf course, Gertie, wool is the natural alternative to spandex...
Deleteand what about the shoes? those purple pumps look absolutely gorgeous with the skirt, as the black ones in your last outfit, but if you had to be era-proper, what shoes would go with 50s full skirts? in winter time?
I hadn't noticed this pattern but was recently thinking about how to 'hack' a wrap dress into a top like this - SCORE!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it so much and it fits you perfectly. I also really love the skirt fabric. That floral sateen is just beautiful!!
I've been wanting to do a look like this one, with a close-fitting top out of knit and a full skirt. I feel like you read my mind.
ReplyDeleteThe grey top and floral skirt combination looks so fab! I also tend to mix my greys with softer and feminine prints so it lightens up the mood for the entire outfit. And totally agree on the purple shoes. A girl can’t have too much shoes, we wear a lot of colors!
