Hi all! As promised, here are pics of me modeling my finished version of
Butterick 5824. To see all the posts on the making of this coat, please click
here.
I'm loving this coat! My only regret is the way I did the contrast band on the collar. I now realize it would have been wiser to wrap the black bias band around to the bottom of the collar so you can't see the undercollar fabric peeking out. My method would have worked in a thinner fabric, but this one is so thick that you can see the layers of the collar, despite my best pressing, basting, and steaming efforts. Live and learn?
I'm already scheming another version of this coat, in a lightweight wool. The lace/boiled wool fabric I used here has a lot of body, and I'd love to have a drapey version that could double as a dress. Perhaps in a silver-colored wool gabardine?
The fit came out nicely, though with a bit more ease in the waistline than I anticipated. This works well for outerwear, but for my dress version, I'll be nipping in the waist a bit.
The whole thing is lined in Kasha satin (flannel-backed lining fabric) so it's very warm.
I can't wait to wear it out on the town!
Thanks to all who are participating int he sew-along. I can't wait to see your versions!
Love that coat! My dressmaking skills are still primary level, but I am so inspired. It's good to know that superior skills are attainable.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI think it will also make a really pretty dress.
It's simply beautiful and so chic!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely lovely! It is so "you!"
ReplyDeleteIt is so very flattering! Looks so cozy but stylish. I particularly love the flare of the skirt in the back. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe coat turned out wonderfully! You picked great fabric.

Beautiful, the fit looks good on you, I love the drape of the skirt, the fabric, Gertie, you`re so nifty with the needle. Well done!
ReplyDeleteYay! Good job, the coat looks very romantic and nostalgic. If it snows in NY this winter you should definitely take a carriage ride in the central park.. and take lots of pic too. I love the mood of it.
ReplyDeleteit is absolutely gorgeous!! I cannot wait to make one myself. so elegant, so stylish. It's worth a standing applause :)
ReplyDeleteLovely coat!
ReplyDeleteOh my, so chic! If you want to practice the collar again (and challenge your size-grading skills), I'll send you my measurements, and you can make one for me, K?
ReplyDeleteWOW! very pretty! it's very elegant and so girly, I like the shape of it.
ReplyDeleteGreat! I do like the contrasting trim.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful coat!
ReplyDeleteDo you take your completed jackets and coats to the dry cleaners for a final press?
It is so beautiful! I really love the contrast on the collar, and I think the undercollar peeking out looks intentional, like piping.
ReplyDeleteI love how elegant your pattern and fabric are... good choice!
It's gorgeous. Love the fabric and the trim. The skirt of the coat falls beautifully. Thanks for sharing. When our winter comes nearer I'm going to give it a go myself. Congratulations of such a fabulous piece.
ReplyDeleteSo elegant! The drape of the skirt is perfect. You are so talented and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteOh my god! this is awsome!!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a fabulous coat! I love those shoes with it too. I can't wait to see the dress version.

ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing coat. Love it.
ReplyDeleteJust one word: WOW!!!
ReplyDeleteGertie, I like the look of the narrow edge of undercollar fabric. Although you didn't share a close-up photo, I think it looks elegant!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your coat is so elegant and feminine. The edge of the under collar peeking out gives a piped effect, which I like. Your blog inspires me to tackle more difficult sewing projects. I love your shoes, they look straight out of the 40's.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely gorgeous! i can't wait till i can sew as pro as you :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and practical. Always a perfect combination.
ReplyDeleteI think your version is nicer on you than the royal blue one that the model is wearing.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!!! mine is kind of in time out. love the rosie pics ;D
ReplyDeletete quedo hermoso el abrigo!!!!!!!!!!!!! me encanta!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! The coat looks fabulous! Love the backside view: the skirt falls beautifully. You rock yet again!
ReplyDeleteWow it is really amazing! Now I have something to aim for, maybe in a year I can make a coat like that, but then again on a high school budget I can't afford satin and wool. I will be heading out to the garment district next week, unfortunately there are only three or four stores open Sundays, the only dayI can go. I will be going to Prime, Chic and Paron fabrics in the W.37th area. Anyone here havesuggestions for getting the best bargains?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely check out the 50% off section at Paron's--it's all the way in the back. And don't forget your student ID--they'll give you a discount!
DeleteThanks! I will definitely remember. I am going with two friends who are even more beginner than me, I think one wants to make loose lounging pants, but as for me, I am almost finished with a pencil skirt, this time it fits perfectly, and I have no other projects in mind after, so I am thinking it is gonna be kinda spontaneous, like ooo ah, those fabrics are nice, can I have two yards?
DeleteIt turned out really beautifully! The shape is has on you is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous...love the coat!
ReplyDeleteIts gorgeous :)
