Butterick 5824, Finished!

Hi all! As promised, here are pics of me modeling my finished version of Butterick 5824. To see all the posts on the making of this coat, please click here.

I'm loving this coat! My only regret is the way I did the contrast band on the collar. I now realize it would have been wiser to wrap the black bias band around to the bottom of the collar so you can't see the undercollar fabric peeking out. My method would have worked in a thinner fabric, but this one is so thick that you can see the layers of the collar, despite my best pressing, basting, and steaming efforts. Live and learn?

I'm already scheming another version of this coat, in a lightweight wool. The lace/boiled wool fabric I used here has a lot of body, and I'd love to have a drapey version that could double as a dress. Perhaps in a silver-colored wool gabardine?
The fit came out nicely, though with a bit more ease in the waistline than I anticipated. This works well for outerwear, but for my dress version, I'll be nipping in the waist a bit.
The whole thing is lined in Kasha satin (flannel-backed lining fabric) so it's very warm.

I can't wait to wear it out on the town!

    Yay! Good job, the coat looks very romantic and nostalgic. If it snows in NY this winter you should definitely take a carriage ride in the central park.. and take lots of pic too. I love the mood of it.

    It is so beautiful! I really love the contrast on the collar, and I think the undercollar peeking out looks intentional, like piping.

    Gertie, I like the look of the narrow edge of undercollar fabric. Although you didn't share a close-up photo, I think it looks elegant!

    Wow! Your coat is so elegant and feminine. The edge of the under collar peeking out gives a piped effect, which I like. Your blog inspires me to tackle more difficult sewing projects. I love your shoes, they look straight out of the 40's.

    Wow it is really amazing! Now I have something to aim for, maybe in a year I can make a coat like that, but then again on a high school budget I can't afford satin and wool. I will be heading out to the garment district next week, unfortunately there are only three or four stores open Sundays, the only dayI can go. I will be going to Prime, Chic and Paron fabrics in the W.37th area. Anyone here havesuggestions for getting the best bargains?

      Thanks! I will definitely remember. I am going with two friends who are even more beginner than me, I think one wants to make loose lounging pants, but as for me, I am almost finished with a pencil skirt, this time it fits perfectly, and I have no other projects in mind after, so I am thinking it is gonna be kinda spontaneous, like ooo ah, those fabrics are nice, can I have two yards?
