Hello, lovely readers! I just received a huge box of my book from my publisher, and I want to put the extra copies to good use. I know a lot of people are under tight budgets these days, so I want to do a giveaway targeted specifically toward people who can't afford to buy the book right now. If you're a student, unemployed, underemployed, a new mom, saving for buying a house . . . whatever the case is--it's none of my business, quite frankly! But I want to make sure that folks who want a copy have a way of getting it. I know library wait lists can be long and frustrating.
If you'd like a copy of the book and can't swing the cost right now, send me an email at gretchen (at) blogforbettersewing (dot) com with the subject line "BOOK GIVEAWAY" and please include your email and mailing address. All countries are included. I will randomly pick five people and send you a free copy of the book. The drawing will be in a week. Good luck!
Sent!! oh PLEASE pick me~! :D
ReplyDeleteBravo. I don't qualify, but I applaud your giving desires. You are a lovely person Miss Gertie. k.
ReplyDeleteme either, so brava and good luck to five lucky peeps
DeleteI don't qualify either, but applaud this gesture. It speaks volumes. What a wonderful thing to do.
ReplyDeleteThat's excellent and very kind of you. I have already bought it, and I'm glad you are sharing it this way.
ReplyDeleteah that's so sweet of you, book has been on my wish list since you said you were writing one.
ReplyDeletehugs joan in italy
Sent! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have your book and I'm doing most of the patterns(!) I love that you're doing this. I wish you would write Volume 2, 3, 4....
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Brazil!
This is so sweet of you to do this!
ReplyDeleteWhat a generous thing to do! I'm lucky enough to have a copy already and it's an absolutely beautiful book.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea! Very nice of you! I hope it lands in the hands of the people who really crave it, but lack the funds!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely thought, I don't qualify but I hope those books find some happy owners.
ReplyDeleteSide note: I have a very hard time proving I'm not a robot! Those letters can be really hard to distinguish.
ReplyDeleteHaha, me too! I tried getting rid of the word verification, but the amount of spam I got was totally overwhelming. :(
DeleteHow kind! What a lovely thought!
ReplyDeleteI can afford one too, just wanted to say what an awesome to give back! Continued success and blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteSO kind! I would love to put my name forward, but I'm emigrating in a month, so I'm trying to get rid of books, not get new ones! I'll be buying a copy once I'm settled though.
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet for doing this. Good luck to every one entering and lets all keep our fingers crossed
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet. I got a copy my birthday. I am so exited.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered my copy yesterday. I had to wait for my tax refund (which happens at a different time of year in Australia) and pay all my bills first. Dang. Oh well looking forward to getting my hands on it.
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered why the US does it in April. Did someone just pick a random date out of a hat?
Their tax year is based on a calendar year which means everyone has four months to do their tax. Much like in Au where most people need to lodge thier return by the end of Oct.
DeleteGertie - would love a copy but I think I can wait til Christmas :) Great idea!
But it seems to me from over here that there are very real consequences in the US for not getting your tax in on time.
DeleteIn Australia the tax office isn't going to chase you down unless you owe them money and for most people that never happens.
Bought on pre-order, but name and addy thrown in hat for a very lovely friend of mine
ReplyDeleteGertie - this is such an awesome and generous thing to do!
ReplyDeleteThis is really lovely of you! I already have my copy (and will be inserting a lining into my GORGEOUS raspberry-coloured tweed version of the pencil skirt this weekend, yay!) but just wanted to say: Yay! What a nice idea!
ReplyDeleteAlso wanted to say thanks for the book and the inspiration. I've been reading your blog for a couple of years now and it's really ispired me, to sew learn and improve, and I'm now finally at the stage where I'm making garments I'm really proud of - and a lot of it's down to you. So thanks!
What a lovely thing to do, Gertie!
ReplyDeleteHi Gertie - blessing to you for sharing such a fantastic book. Received my copy of your book from America last week. As a man, I won't be able to use the patterns (lucky the woman who ends up with my copy years from now) - but love the technique part. Not sure if you'll actually read my bit - but would love any suggestions on using your book with mens patterns. Already purchased a suit pattern to follow (as close as I can) with your jacket pattern. Again, you wrote a wonderful book. Thanks for helping my sewing to get to the next level.
ReplyDeleteRon, you might like the books by David P. Coffin. Published by Taunton Press. They also have a book called "Couture Sewing Techniques" by Claire Shaeffer - good for jackets, etc.
DeleteVery generous. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI already have (and love) the book, but I've passed this along to some sewing friends with tight budgets!
ReplyDeleteJust traced the portrait blouse, so I wish good luck to five lucky ones!
ReplyDeleteYou have such a kind and sharing sole - there are going to be several people doing a 'happy dance' in a weeks time...J
ReplyDeleteWoo, how exciting! Thanks for the giveaway :)
ReplyDeletedo you ship it to the Nederlands?? If so, I'm so liking your style!!
ReplyDeleteThis such a lovely gesture! Great doings Gertie!
ReplyDeleteHi Gertie, I have two lovely ideas, one copy for the gorgeous S, who works part-time at The Fabric Store Newstead, Brisbane. S has a passion for sewing for herself and others and she has the most charming vintage style. She's also a mother to two small boys. Her customer service in the store is outstanding and you just love her the second you meet her! I could see your book on the counter for a wee while and then lovely S could take it home! S has a blog cirquedubebe, if you want to look at it in spare moment! My next idea is a copy for my chalkface's library! I have enjoyed showing your blog on the data projector many times and your image really gets positive attention! I was always going on about Gertie this and that during last term. And guess what my class has the Bernina 1010 sewing machine! Same as yours!! That was a funny moment when I flashed up your machine image post and told the workers we were in good company! Ps in Australia will pay for postage! Xx
ReplyDeleteSent you an email... Am a new Mum, unemployed, and lover or vintage style I would love your book but cannot afford it. But not sure if my sewing skills are up to the standard in your book.
DeleteSo I am going to agree with Flora Fascinata, I think Sophie of:
http://cirque-du-bebe.blogspot.com.au/ would be an amazing recipient of your book.

This is lovely of you Iliska! X
DeleteWow this is so nice. I'm loving my copy of the book so i'm sure the 5 lucky people will really appreciate theirs too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely idea! I guess I qualify, so I tried my luck and sent the email. Fingers crossed for all the participants!
ReplyDeleteHugs!!
That's a really nice thing to do!
ReplyDeleteThat's so generous! I can afford it - I'm just too cheap to buy it right now so will probably ask for it for Christmas! - so I'll save the entry for people who need it more than me, but what a lovely giveaway. Some people will be very happy very soon!
ReplyDeleteI already have the book, but what a very nice thing to do!
ReplyDeleteI don't qualify either but I admire your generosity very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful, generous and awesome thing to do. Go you!
ReplyDeleteYou are indeed a kind lady. I knew, quite apart from all the sewing, that I would like you as a Friend too. Happily, I can say that I bought your book & have used some of the pattern alteration info. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such a generous giveaway! I've wanted a copy of the book, but funds have been a bit low lately. Off to go send you an e-mail! :)

ReplyDeleteSophie
just emailed you too
ReplyDeleteI have my copy but I just wanted to say "Bravo" for such a great giveaway. And congratulations for such a super book. I'm looking forward to making some of your lovely patterns.
ReplyDeleteFortunately,I won't need such a generous offer of a free copy .... this time(yay me!!). I did want you to know (if you even believe in such a thing) that there is such a thing as good kharma. In a age where people think about themselves, it's refreshing that there are people like you.....
ReplyDeleteThis is such a kind idea and the book looks so great!
ReplyDeleteThank you to be just like you are. This is refreshing and it gives hope!!
ReplyDeleteOh! I thank God for your generosity. I've been wanting your book since it came out especially after I read some of the reviews on Amazon but currently unemployed. I hope you pick me! If not I hope whoever gets it will be blessed!
ReplyDeleteOops! I didn't follow directions very well. In my excitement, I sent my email to gertie @ blogforbettersewing rather than gretchen @ blogforbettersewing. Should I resend the email?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Ember
Nope! That address gets sent to me, too. I have two identities. :)
DeleteYou're too nice!! I know whoever wins will love it. I'm loving the book. I look at it anytime I can.
ReplyDeleteVery nice of you. Just sent an email.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, lots of comments. Just wanted to thank you for the nice gesture, you are so sweet. Love knowing people like you, even only through the internet. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, this is such a nice idea! I just received your book and I'm happy that more pople will be able to enjoy it this way :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a question, since I can't find the answer in the book: are the sewing allowances included in the patterns? I'm from Europe and I'm used to add them by myself, but I know that in the USA they're often already included. I'm a bit confused!
They are already included! The allowance is 5/8", which I believe translates to 1.5 cm. But please do measure the flat pattern first (as I recommend in the fitting chapter). Some are finding the patterns more close-fitting than they would normally wear.
DeleteThank you! Yes, it's 1,6 cm but with other American patterns I've used 1,5 cm and it worked without problems :-)
DeleteThank you for the advice, I can't wait to try sewing them!
Just sent you an email. I have fingers and toes crossed that I'm picked :) X
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet thing to do Gretchen :)
ReplyDeleteFingers x I'm picked. I'm just starting out and this would SO help me. I've sent the email for my entry. Thanks so much.
Hugs,
Alli :)
A lovely thing to do, thank you! My fingers are crossed!! :)
ReplyDeletePlanning a wedding on a budget over here! Trying to save money buy making my own wedding dress (plus, it would be so amazing to make it myself) and your book would be such a help in the techniques department!
ReplyDeleteso 10,092 miles from where you are is a small pile of your books in Canberra, Australia at the National Portrait Gallery bookshop. There you go! :)
ReplyDeleteDo we email or comment here? Regardless, I'd love copy being on one income with two kids. Susan
ReplyDeleteI've already sent you my e-mail, but I also wanted to say thank you for this wonderful give away anyway! Been pinching so many pennies these last few years that my fingers hurt! Whoever wins these books will be seriously blessed. :D
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a copy of your new book! It looks amaaaazing! I'm a recent college grad who now has time for sewing since I'm not school in any more! But all my money goes to paying of student loans. What a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHope I get a copy :) Can't wait for the results.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever do the drawing?
ReplyDeleteI don't qualify, but I ordered mine today from Amazon. So very nice of you to give some away to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to get one. I also got my coat pattern today, so hopefully, will be starting it soon. It's been fun to read the posts
