I'm going to the Sewing and Stitchery Expo, readers! As some of you know, I was originally supposed to be teaching there, but the company sponsoring me had to cancel, and hence, my classes were canceled. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a teensy bit devastated, as this is only the largest consumer sewing show in the country and I like to be where the sewing action is. Enter my friends at Coats & Clark, who kindly offered to host me--just so I can hang out and experience the show! So, while I won't be teaching, I will be out and about--and trying not to do too much damage to my bank account at the vendor booths. Will I see any of you there? (I'll be blogging the whole thing too, if you're curious.)
P.S. If any of you have tips on how to pronounce Puyallup, I'm all ears.
pew (like church pew) -al (like the name Al)- up
ReplyDeleteHave a great time! (should be easy, it's an impressive show)
Awww, lucky you! These events never happen when I have scheduled lay-offs (I work in a school). So, I'm a wee bit jealous. Have a great time, can't wait to read your blog posts on the event.
ReplyDeleteI can't go, so will look forward to enjoying it vicariously through your blog posts. Have a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteI might make it out there! I can't tell you how to pronounce "Puyallup," because I've only lived in the Pacific NW for a few months, and it's hard to remember how to pronounce. I would love to meet you!
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish! It's just across the border from me, too. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your blog through Craftsy, where I am taking a class. I was just reading my grandmother's copy of the Vogue Book for Better Sewing last week so I love that this book has been your inspiration! She's 87 and doesn't sew anymore, so next time I see her I am going to ask her to save that book for me! I won't be surprised to find some of those original patterns either.
ReplyDeleteHave fun in Puyallup! XO, Jill
I will be going for the first time, Hope to see you there! And it is pronounced just like SMB said.
ReplyDeleteI actually signed up for one of your classes and was so bummed that it was cancelled! But, I'll be there both Thursday and Saturday (long-winded story about why I'll be there 2 days instead of my usual 1, but I'm not complaining ;) ) and would love to meet/run into you. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Sewing Expo is amazing (I've been going there since 2007 when I was 17 - yep, except for the grandmas that bring their little granddaughters I'm usually one of the youngest people there) and I'm sure you'll have a great time. :)
I will not be there, but I will be tuned into your blogs as you share what it is like! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that's really cool! It's right across the border from me too, but alas, I don't have a car and no 'real life' sewing buddies, so I won't be able to make it. Have fun for all of us! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the Expo before, but now I might have to bust up there from PDX this weekend! Bummer you aren't teaching, I would have LOVED to take a class from you!!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to figure out child care so I can go - I've been wanting to go ever since Dec. 2010 when I found out we were moving to the PNW.
ReplyDeleteGlad you can go Gertie, enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting about Puyallup - I live in SW France and there are several villages nearby with names prefixed Puy- or Pouy- We used to live in Pouylebon.
Locals say Puy either means a hill or a well.
You're kidding, Puyallup!? I'm so there!
ReplyDeleteIt's pronounced poo-YALL-up.
It's in Washington, it's cool!
ReplyDeleteAnd it's pronounced Pew al up
It's pew-allup, rhymes with gallop. I was born there, i should know.
ReplyDeleteMy French self would pronounce it :"P-huh-ee-a-l-huh-p" and hope it will sound cute :)
ReplyDeleteFun!! I wish I could go! I live in Seattle but don't have time :( Pyoo AL up. Glad you're visiting the PNW!
ReplyDeleteSMB has the correct pronunciation! The emphasis is on the "al". A Native American tribe actually. Home of the world's best fair. Well, maybe the world's best Washington Fair, the Puyallup Fair in August! I shall do my best to drive down I live about 2-1/2 hours away. So excited to be able to meet the wonderful Gretchen Hirsch!!
ReplyDeletepew-al-up for the win! I hope you have time to do some sight seeing outside of Puyallup.
ReplyDeletePronounced as SMB said.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time! Sorry your class got cancelled. I'm skipping the expo this year - I'm sewing instead. I even took Monday the 5th off to have a long sewing weekend!
I will be going to the Expo. (I live near Seattle) I'm glad you posted, because the schedule still lists you as teaching. I was going to sign up for one of your classes. I hope I can run into you when I am there on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteSo nice of C&C. I like their thread. Good luck with your vendor will power!
ReplyDeleteI'll be there on Friday! My best friend and I take the day off to go then, because it's a teeny bit less insanely crowded than the weekend days. Make sure you enjoy a scone for breakfast!
ReplyDeleteHave a great time. Wish I could be there. A bit far to come from Australia. I will be there in spirit.
ReplyDeleteNot going, but am looking forward to your blogging of the event.
ReplyDeleteAny chance you'll be back in Michigan for the ASG Expo in Novi in September? Would love to see you there, hopefully teaching.
Lucky you. When I lived in WA, it was the highlight of my year. I am back in TX now and will be doing he Dallas Quilt Show instead. Have tons of fun. Lots of independent pattern companies and great fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming - I've missed the last 3 years (living abroad) but back in beautiful PNW. Can hardly wait!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Portland, so it wouldn't be a bad drive, but we'll be in the Midwest surprising my dad for his 82nd birthday (tomorrow)! Enjoy and keep those blogs coming :-)
ReplyDeletewow! that sounds great! i'd love to go there, but it's a bit too far away from barcelona...
ReplyDeleteanyway, have fun!! i hope to see some pictures in your blog afterwards!
I was soooooo excited when I saw you are going to be at the Expo!!! I love your blog! I will be there on Saturday and I hope you are too!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'll be busy having fun, getting tips and shopping (?) but please, please, pretty please take lots of pictures and make posts so we can live vicariously through you. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteHere are some people pronouncing it:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.forvo.com/word/puyallup/
SMB is correct!
ReplyDeleteI really ought to be there...after all, my sister lives in Puyallup! But alas, not this year. Maybe in 2013...
ReplyDeleteMost people pronounce it, Pew Al Ip with all three syllables given equal emphasis(like the word dinosaur, Die No Sore.)Wow-lucky day for you Gretchen, you get to go to the Expo and get a pronunciation lesson! Then again, this might be a regular day for you, sewing, reading, blogging!
ReplyDeleteHooray! I was so bummed that you weren't teaching, but I'm glad to hear that you will get to go and have fun. It's a really great time!
ReplyDeleteHopefully I will get a Gertie sighting :)
I've been torn - it's a three hour drive for me as I'm at the coast! I wanted so bad to go and take one of your classes and meet you, but now I'm having a hard time justifying the trip. The shopping is great (for us non-New Yorker-ers). And yes, the correct pronunciation is just as SMB said!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely time, looking forward to hearing all about it! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI guess as a Seattleite, I've been pronouncing it wrong my whole life. I say "pew-ALL-up," ("all" like the laundry detergent). That's how they say it on the commercials for the Puyallup Fair, at least. Be careful NOT to say "poo-yallup."
ReplyDeleteI read this blog.It really interesting enjoyable blog.Thanx to share with us.
ReplyDeleteAs kids, we always joked about a friend's mom who called it "Pully-up" I'm sorry I missed you at Sew Expo. Tell me you'll come again next year.
ReplyDeleteA local.
O.K. sooo here is my shot at Puyallup is pronounced Pew-awl-lup. I grew up in Tacoma, Seattle and then moved to Portland in High School.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time... might want to take a fold up umbrella! Always helps to be prepared! People complain about the rain... ahem... people... that's what makes the Pacific Northwest soo beautiful!!!
Enjoy your trip!
Pu (like stinky) al (like Al the plumber) Up (like up up and away)
ReplyDeleteAin't them scones great the pu al up ones?
ReplyDeleteSomehow I always heard it as p-YALL-up, like "get y'all up here now!", but with a "p" before. But that might just be my family.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, those scones are Fabulous!
