I'm going to the Sewing and Stitchery Expo, readers! As some of you know, I was originally supposed to be teaching there, but the company sponsoring me had to cancel, and hence, my classes were canceled. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a teensy bit devastated, as this is only the largest consumer sewing show in the country and I like to be where the sewing action is. Enter my friends at
Coats & Clark, who kindly offered to host me--just so I can hang out and experience the show! So, while I won't be teaching, I will be out and about--and trying not to do too much damage to my bank account at the vendor booths. Will I see any of you there? (I'll be blogging the whole thing too, if you're curious.)
P.S. If any of you have tips on how to pronounce Puyallup, I'm all ears.

Awww, lucky you! These events never happen when I have scheduled lay-offs (I work in a school). So, I'm a wee bit jealous. Have a great time, can't wait to read your blog posts on the event.

ReplyDeleteI might make it out there! I can't tell you how to pronounce "Puyallup," because I've only lived in the Pacific NW for a few months, and it's hard to remember how to pronounce. I would love to meet you!

I was just reading my grandmother's copy of the Vogue Book for Better Sewing last week so I love that this book has been your inspiration! She's 87 and doesn't sew anymore, so next time I see her I am going to ask her to save that book for me! I won't be surprised to find some of those original patterns either.

ReplyDeleteI actually signed up for one of your classes and was so bummed that it was cancelled! But, I'll be there both Thursday and Saturday (long-winded story about why I'll be there 2 days instead of my usual 1, but I'm not complaining ;) ) and would love to meet/run into you. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Sewing Expo is amazing (I've been going there since 2007 when I was 17 - yep, except for the grandmas that bring their little granddaughters I'm usually one of the youngest people there) and I'm sure you'll have a great time. :)

ReplyDeleteInteresting about Puyallup - I live in SW France and there are several villages nearby with names prefixed Puy- or Pouy- We used to live in Pouylebon.
Locals say Puy either means a hill or a well.

ReplyDeleteSMB has the correct pronunciation! The emphasis is on the "al". A Native American tribe actually. Home of the world's best fair. Well, maybe the world's best Washington Fair, the Puyallup Fair in August! I shall do my best to drive down I live about 2-1/2 hours away. So excited to be able to meet the wonderful Gretchen Hirsch!!

ReplyDeleteI'll be there on Friday! My best friend and I take the day off to go then, because it's a teeny bit less insanely crowded than the weekend days. Make sure you enjoy a scone for breakfast!

Lucky you. When I lived in WA, it was the highlight of my year. I am back in TX now and will be doing he Dallas Quilt Show instead. Have tons of fun. Lots of independent pattern companies and great fabrics.

I've been torn - it's a three hour drive for me as I'm at the coast! I wanted so bad to go and take one of your classes and meet you, but now I'm having a hard time justifying the trip. The shopping is great (for us non-New Yorker-ers). And yes, the correct pronunciation is just as SMB said!

ReplyDeleteI guess as a Seattleite, I've been pronouncing it wrong my whole life. I say "pew-ALL-up," ("all" like the laundry detergent). That's how they say it on the commercials for the Puyallup Fair, at least. Be careful NOT to say "poo-yallup."

O.K. sooo here is my shot at Puyallup is pronounced Pew-awl-lup. I grew up in Tacoma, Seattle and then moved to Portland in High School.
