Rock 'n' Roll Hair

DUDE! Does my hair look awesome or what? (Or maybe it looks like a bump-it gone awry. But no! It's all real, baby. Just teased to high heaven.) Anyway, I wrote a post today for STC Craft in which I try out a couple hairdos from the new Bust DIY Guide to Life. Come check it out. (The other 'do was inspired by Frida Kahlo, my idol.)

This is the style that inspired me to come up with a plan for a motorcycle jacket sew-along; more to come on that front. The readers on Facebook and the Twitters were very responsive. What do you think--badass jacket sew-along in early 2012? After all, we need something to wear with our bouffants and skintight pedal pushers! (I feel a Grease number coming on.)

I've been wanting a motorcycle jacket for a long time and can't seem to find one. I think a sew along is a great idea.

  8. Are you thinking of using Kwik Sew's motorcycle jacket? It's really well drafted, I used it to make a version in silk organza

  9. Great hairdo! I don't think I'd ever have the patience to sew a motorcycle jacket, but I'll read the tutorial for any of your great tip on construction if you decide to do a sewalong!

  10. That looks so cool. Sadly my hair isn't as long as I'd like for this look. But please do a sew-along. I'll probably use a girlie fabric though :) And by the time I actually finish sewing (read: A year after you're done with the sew-along) my hair will be long enough :)

  13. Love the hair! And I'd be really, really interested in a motorcycle jacket sewalong. There's this pile of incredibly convincing brown faux leather in my stash that's wanted to come out and play, but so far I've been too chicken to attempt it. Sounds like this might be just the thing!

  16. i adore frida, (i often ask if Frida would wear it when buying jewelry!) although i would love to pull off her trademark braids with ribbon and flowers I'm blonde and am worried i would look too much like a swedish heidi!
sew along is a GREAT idea by the way. doo wop baby!

  19. Wow, both of those looks are beautifully done and suit you perfectly! Amazing how they are so different but both "go with" your gorgeous ink art.
I'm a YES on the motorcycle jacket - lots of metal zippers and other details, please.

  24. You look incredibly wonderful! I am hot to rock a beehive myself but the hair is not long enough, still--- there is a little retro-ness to be had! Jacket? Yes, I have printed out the Burda Motorcycle jacket but have yet to make plans for it.

  25. I love your hair!!! And motorcycle jacket, yes please!!!

  26. I like both the styles and I think you rock them! Funny, when I do a braided Frida thing, I think I look like Heidi. But, other people seem to like it. Perception is weird.

  27. Oh my, I am excited. I was thinking how I would love to make a motorcycle jacket instead of purchasing one to ride around on my scooter with.

    I can't wait.

  28. Excellent hair!

Well up for the motorcycle jacket sewalong, if only for the pretty pictures which will follow from yourself and others. Not sure I have enough confidence in my sewing abilities to actually attempt, but I'm certainly going to bear it in mind!

  35. Grease is the word that your heard, that your heard. Damn it now I have to listen to Frankie Valli. :)

A motorcycle jacket sew along sounds fun. Especially since I have Black and brown pleather already in the stash.

You're hair looks great by the way.

  37. I love the hair!

By the way, on the subject of motorcycle jackets: I believe you already received your copy of the Burdastyle book at the party. My jacket variation in it was based very loosely on a motorcycle jacket, inspired by the Rolling Stones song 'Motorcycle mama'...

  38. I'll join the sew along. I dream of a Helmut Lang motorcycle style jacket to wear over a LBD

  40. I loved the hair post- makes me want to get the book!
And I'd definitely be down for a motorcycle jacket sew-along. I've never managed to find one that fits my shoulders, waist, and bust properly, and I would love to try it in a fun fabric (since black leather isn't really my thing)

  41. The sew along would be awesome! I want a motorcycle jacket and I'd love to use leather. Unfortunately I haven't managed to get my machine to sew it, so it would be perfect if you could include some tips on that. If that shouldn't work, I'd probably make one anyway and use aome other material..

  42. Yes, yes and yes! I would love to start making leather jackets but I am a little intimidated. A leather jacket sew-along would be amazing!

  43. Seriously LOVE the Rock 'n Roll hair!

It was so great to meet you in person last weekend.

  44. This is the sew along I want...the one I want, one I want, ooh, ooh, ooh! I'm picturing tweed or velvet, though, or maybe even lace.

  46. Gorgeous, Gretchen! And, a motorcycle jacket Sew-Along would be awesome. I'd definitely push aside my other sewing projects for something like that!

  47. I'd love to sew along with a motorcycle jacket - I ordered the moto jacket from Hot Patterns and am planning to use that pattern! Great idea!
