I'm here for the Sewing Summit this weekend, and came a bit early with my friend Ashlee, who is originally from Salt Lake. I'm staying at her lovely family's lovely house with this lovely temporary cat, who is helping me bear the separation from my own adorable kitties a bit better. I'm working on my book today and prepping my classes for the Sewing Summit, but don't worry--it's not all work! I'll have time to explore some vintage shops here later today and relax a bit too. And hopefully find some time to play around on Ashlee's mom's amazing vintage sewing machine. It's pink!
I've been so fortunate to see so many parts of the country this year: St. Paul, Cleveland, Novi, and now Salt Lake City. (And Orlando next week!) I've truly liked each one of them, and the change of pace is refreshing. I've been so stressed at home, and traveling can certainly be stressful too. But all the gallivanting has really helped me detach from my day-to-day life, which is a kind of a good thing right now!

Try and get out for some good ethnic food. SLC has some AMAZING Thai and Indian restaurants. I know it sounds strange, but the LDS mission influence has brought back some great cuisine. Plus I hear they're loosened their alcohol laws which should make getting a drink easier (Utah-brews are often quite good).
ReplyDeleteOh, and Cafe Rio is like Chipotle but way better. And I know for some people to say that is heresy, but they make their tortillas right there.

ReplyDeleteWelcome to Utah and autumn! If you get a chance, head up the canyons to Park City or Sundance--some awesome places to shop up there, not to mention the scenery. Decades is a lovely vintage shop (with a cat and a sparkly floor!) in SLC on State and about 600 South. It might also be worth your while to hit up the Family History Library near Temple Square. There are also some really lovely cemeteries in Salt Lake, if you like that kind of thing. If you haven't heard of Amy Royer and Yellow Bird Fabrics, you must! She's wonderful and has one of the best fabric stores in the state. I suspect she might be at the summit, so you might run into her. Have fun! Stay warm!

ReplyDeleteMy travels to SLC were more than a decade ago so I can't share any good eating or shopping tips, but I know you'll find plenty of good stuff.

Welcome to our neck of the woods! Ditto what Marie said about Cafe Rio. MUCH better than Chipotle. And Star of India right in downtown SLC is by far the best Indian around. Going there tomorrow nigh for my anniversary, in fact!

I'm in SLC and couldn't make the summit. We've had such lovely weather and this weekend turned out so cold. Like the others have said, if you have chance, go to the mountains and see the beautiful fall colors, see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Sunday morning, and eat some good Thai food as well.
