I'm back! The Great Blogger Outage of '11 (as it shall henceforth be known) threw a wrench into my weekly posting schedule. For those who don't know, the outage put Blogger into a read-only mode (no posting or commenting) and temporarily removed anything posted since Wednesday. Those posts are now back, but the comments are not. I hear that they'll be restored shortly.
The Great Blogger Outage of '11 really got me thinking. First, I was frustrated. I took to Twitter to talk about migrating to Wordpress. After some thinking, I realized that I needed to put things into perspective. The outage lasted 20.5 hours, which is a long time in internet time, but a short time in the real world. Mostly I was just thrown off guard, and this resulted in me skipping 3 posts that I would have normally done. It also messed with some of my sponsors' ads, which I take seriously. But other than that . . . it really isn't a big deal. So, a reality check was taken.
Which all brings me to the topic of frequency of posting and basically, the future of this blog. As you've noticed, the introduction of The Daily Dress has me now posting twice a day during the week, and the feature you're reading now is my one weekend post. A commenter recently said she thought I was posting too much, and that she would probably unsubscribe. I guess I understand that. But the truth is, I take my future as a blogger and writer quite seriously, and I've always hoped to grow this site into something bigger: a daily blog with more interactive components. I love to write about sewing, but I also love to write about fashion, pop culture, feminism, and body image—all filtered through the lens of someone who makes her own clothes. I guess I will have to accept that I will lose some readers who bemoan that my writing isn't strictly focused on sewing technique all the time. (Sniff.) I am quite sensitive by nature, so this acceptance is a bit difficult at times!
How does this all relate to the Week in Review? Well, this week I was able to put into motion some major life changes that will allow me to focus much more time on my "online presence," as they say. I can't really go into specifics yet, but I will spill all the details in time. This will result in some changes to the blog (and yes, probably the Wordpress migration that I threatened earlier) that will bring you all more sewing tutorials, content, and community.
So it was an exciting week at Chez Gertie. I'm looking forward to the changes that the future holds, since they will allow me to follow my passion more fully. And I'm looking forward to having you all along for the ride. As always, thanks for reading!
what does it mean?? you are so mysterious, Gertie! =)

ReplyDeleteBest of luck in your new ventures with the blog. There's room out there for your vision!
ReplyDeleteGertie, you have set the standard of excellence for sewing-and-style blogs, so I hope you'll take any criticism you may occasionally receive with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear about the changes and don't think we're not taking notes and knocking you off in the best Canal Street tradition. ;)
i can't get enough of you! if you updates thrice an hour i would still be wanting more!
ReplyDeleteAs a mostly lurky reader I say 'Hurrah! More Gertie Blog!'
ReplyDeleteYou can't post too much for me.
ReplyDeleteI understand the migration over to WP. There are so many options for taking your blog in whatever direction you choose.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about the daily dress - I'm not so much into celebrity-ville but it's interesting from time to time.
The main reason that I sew is because I don't want to look like everyone else out there. I want to choose my style, color, length and fit. All that said, I love your take on fashion in the real world.
I miss your sewing posts they are the reason that I read your blog! I hope that your mysterious news will mean more sewing related posts.
ReplyDeleteErica
Good luck with your mysterious changes!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it would be possible to set up separate RSS feeds for different types of posts, so that people could, if they desired, just subscribe to the sewing posts or just the daily dress, etc. Or, of course, the whole shebang :)
I totally enjoy your blog and I am not even interested in half of the topics you mentioned. :D
ReplyDeleteI suppose it is the "through the eyes of a seamstress" that brings me back again and again. I look at the world that way, too.
And as Peter said, I hope you'll take any criticism you may occasionally receive with a grain of salt.
I look forward to seeing your site unfold.
Hey Gertie! I really want to encourage you to follow your own vision for the blog and what ever else you might be working on, and do what's right you! I'll still be a fan no matter what you decide to do, and I appreciate your insights on the world of fashion, sewing, body-image and feminism. Keep on being your awesome self!
ReplyDeleteI love both the sewing and the not so sewing related posts - I get a ton of inspiration from the daily dress (or ideas on what I don't like!) and I love the sociology aspect of things too. In other words I like what you're doing!
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly I first followed you because of the sewing, but in reading your blog my eyes have been opened to many things I hadn't stopped to consider, and it all ties back to the sewing so there's a common theme, or thread?!
Can't wait to hear what your news is!!
That is funny with the blog-outage - what it does to us to be away from blogging or internet for what is truly not a long time.
ReplyDeleteI think it's important that you grow this space in a way that makes you excited. I have to admit, I think you blog a lot too (without any verdict on much, or too much - that's besides the point), but as I reader, I have the choice to skip over posts that I'm not as intrigued with, or when I'm really busy. I don't think a reader should feel pressured into reading or loving every single post that is put up on a blog, nor do I think a blogger should feel pressured into blogging in a way that doesn't make them feel comfortable.
Point being, like you said, you won't win them all, but you also won't win anyone if you stop being your wonderful self Gertie!
I am so excited for the expansion and growth ahead, and I have nothing but respect for your creative, sewing, and writing skills! We're behind you!
Hi, Gertie,
ReplyDeleteJust to say I really like to read your blog no matter how many posts you write :) I'm on the ride!
Your sewing blog is one of the first I found when I decided to start sewing again. That said, I do love your other topics, your posts are well thought out and well written. I'm sticking with you no matter what and can't wait for the reveal of your mysterious news!
ReplyDeleteI miss your sewing posts too, but I figure you're busy sewing up stuff for your book, as well as writing your book. That doesn't leave a lot of time to sew things for the blog and I'm ok with that. I am soooo excited about your book and can't wait to get my mitts on it!
ReplyDeleteI love your daily dress posts too! You have to do what feels right to you. Any change you make might cause some old readers to leave, but that's just the way it is with change. Some people will enjoy the journey and some people won't. No biggie - with every reader you lose, you'll likely gain another that's looking for what you're offering up now. People read blogs for different reasons, and that's ok. Personally I enjoy your writing enough that I'll keep you in my reader for quite a while. Good luck with your future ventures!
I follow a lot of blogs (over 400). I don't have time to read each and every post, so I skim them and read the ones that I feel are relevant. I mean, I don't need to read about some stranger's child when all I am really there for is occasional home decor ideas. That may sound mean, but there is only so much time in a day. I read almost all of your posts (there have been one or two that I skipped). My point is, if people are here for the sewing they can still subscribe or follow the blog and just not read the posts that aren't dealing with sewing.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and think the fashion is fun. I appreciate writing skills and find it fun to branch out. I think body image is a good topic to discuss. There is far too much out there telling us we have to be a certain way to fit in. I really enjoy your wonderful blog!
I love your blog Gertie and it should be what you want it to be, what pleases you more than what pleases others. It's an extension of yourself therefore make it whatever you want.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a lot to say and plenty of people want to listen. I enjoy your sewing posts but your other posts are just as interesting for me. The daily dress should be seen for the dress, which is mostly what the focus of your posts is, and not as celebrity watching. I will continue to check in on your blog daily for inspiration, and I am looking forward to your book too! Maybe I'll start a blog about making the garments in your book, lol!
ReplyDeleteI prefer blogs that are updated frequently, yes even multi-times per day, as opposed to those whose authors are hit-and-miss with posts. So post all you want.:-)
ReplyDeleteGertie, chick, do whatever you want on your own blog. As long as it's fashion-related, I'm on board!
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for anyone else, but I always feel a thrill of excitement when one of your posts pops up into my Google Reader. I usually unsubscribe to blogs for excessive posting because they are heavy on superficial images and light on anything actually interesting to impart. I love pretty pictures, but I don't like my bloggers to be braindead!
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary, I know that your posts are guaranteed to be inspiring and fun, as well as substantive - and often quite thought-provoking. If anything, I would love to see MORE! So am thrilled by this mysterious announcement, how very exciting for you! Keep on at it...and thank you for being you...
Hey Gertie! I don't think you can blog too much if you are giving your readers good content - and you are. I post once a day, and I wish I could do more, because I have so much more I want to say! I use Wordpress and I love it, for whatever it's worth!
ReplyDeleteAs a stay-at-home-mom (SAM's as I like to call us) I need a mommy time out sometimes. I love dialing you up and reading your frequent posts! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I don't get to sew nearly as much as I would like to so I sort of live vicariously through you. Keep up the great work and I'll certainly follow you wherever you may lead. Life is short, do what you love!
ReplyDeleteMa vie en rose captured quite well my sentiments. Your blog is by far my favorite, and I look forward to your posts every day! I was just lamenting the fact that, so often, when bloggers are successful, get a book deal and so on, they post less frequently, so I am happy to hear that there will be more Gertie! Keep being you!
ReplyDeleteI love that you post a lot! If it's to much for people, they don't have to read every post. I enjoy your sewing related posts most but ever blogger goes through phases and changes in their blog so I wouldn't worry about losing a couple followers here and there.
ReplyDeleteI only found your blog last week when looking for sewing blogs, but already I'm hooked! As with any other media, people can pick and choose how much they read, but so far I have found all your posts interesting. I look forward to whatever comes next!
ReplyDeleteI can't get enough of your blog! It's crazy to me that someone would unsubcribed because of TOO many posts. I unsubscribe from blogs that don't post frequently enough! Keep up what you're doing because you'll always have a loyal following.
ReplyDeleteWell I really like your blog. You have great ideas and a modern take on things ( I am a "fogie" so nice to have a young point of view". In answer to "you blog too much"-she isn't tied to a chair and forced to read it. As someone else said you can just skip what you are not interested in.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work,
Terry
For what it's worth, I really love both the frequency and varied content of your blog. Please do continue with your inspired work.
ReplyDeleteThe digressions from sewing techniques are one of the things I LIKE about your blog! I don't have time to sew everyday, and sometimes taking a break to rethink why I sew and what I'm doing with it is good. It's true, you can't make everyone happy so you might as well blog (sew, read, etc) for yourself.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have a huge blog list and people who don't post everyday make it easier for me to keep up. It's not a problem. The one wackadoo thing about the Blogger screw up is because the Wednesday posts were deleted, I had a moment of alarm that morning (since so many of the blogs I follow are on Blogger) that Wednesday HADN'T HAPPENED YET and I would therefore have to repeat it. Note: it was not a good enough day for that to make me happy.
I, too, love it that you post every day, and sometimes twice. It's not only that I like the content, whether specifically about your sewing or farther afield; you are a GOOD WRITER, which is why we all feel like we're part of your community. I'm happy to hear that you are reflecting and changing, and I, too, am up for more Gertie Adventures.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to offer a few words of support and feedback. I've been enjoying the Daily Dress posts, especially those that include pattern recommendations. Whatever life changes you're making, I look forward to continuing to read your blog.
ReplyDeleteI like your blog, I find it interesting and intelligently written. The sewing stuff is great (just having my first go at chiffon interfacing) but love the daily dress and other discussions too. Also like plenty of posts - as others have said you can always skip!
ReplyDeleteGertie, I really appreciate the array of topics about which you so eloquently write. I feel that they are all related. Frankly, your willingness to go beyond "This is how I sewed this garment" not only keeps me coming back for more, but inspired me to widen my blog topics to similarly-related-but-not-the-same topics.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to whatever the future brings for your blog, and wish you the best with all of your upcoming changes!
Your blog posts are the absolute highlight of my Google Reader time. I've enjoyed everything you've written about, even if I haven't agreed with it all. If people don't enjoy "Daily Dress" or whatever, they aren't forced to read it or comment on it. Don't worry so much about what others think...you are a real force of inspiration and creativity. Keep on keeping on!
ReplyDeleteAs someone else who takes my blogging rather seriously, I think that sometimes you need to do what you feel is right! Yes, that may make some people upset, but if it's a topic that excites you (such as the Daily Dress), it is worth pursuing. One of the things I really have grown to love about your blog is the diversity of topics--but most of them tying back into sewing. There are so many facets and off-shoots of things that have to do with sewing we can discuss, it would be a shame not to! So keep up with whatever direction you would like to go with your blog! :)
ReplyDelete- Casey
I definitely love the variety of posts you compose... and like others have mentioned, it's obvious that you're very busy sewing for your book so naturally sewing for the blog/yourself has taken a backseat.
ReplyDeletePretty much all of the blogs I follow have a few posts each week that aren't related to the reason I started following them, but I just skip past them - it's really not a big deal and so I wouldn't take it to heart if some readers wish you only posted sewing posts :)
Good luck with your new venture - I look forward to reading all about it :)
I loved your older post about the VoNBFBS, not that the new ones are bad, I just miss the actual sewing post were we use to get to see the progress you were making. I hope once you have the projects done for your book you be able to share more with us!
ReplyDeleteI read your blog everyday! I don't get into pop culture but when you do the posts on what the stars are wearing, I'm impressed that you find a reasonable modern pattern that is a close match! That makes those posts interesting! Changing blog platforms may or may not fix things. I began at Homeschool Blogger who last year moved our platform to Wordpress, causing my hard worked html code to disappear. I've had wonky symbols mysteriously appear on my blog one night. I haven't found time to eradicate all of them yet. Wordpress can't seem to find the issue. My comment section on my profile page has weird symbols. Now HSB might have to close down so due to that and all the other issues I have moved my sewing/costuming stuff to Blogger and am working on moving my homeschool stuff to Blogger. Then the outage and my last post on my Blogger costume page has not yet returned. However I have learned from this that no blog platforms are perfect and there will occasionaly be issues. I was really impressed with the info I got on the problem at Blogger, which I don't at my other platform. At least people could read my Blogger blogs which doesn't happen when my Wordpress platform through HSB goes down.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd let you know in case you decide to move. Thanks for your posts! I really enjoy thinking about patterns in a new way, which is something I've learned from you.
Laurie
I read a lot more than I comment, but I have to say- you are an inspiration to me and many others! I have turned to your posts many times for info and entertainment. In fact, I used the fabric glue in the seam allowance trick for a hat I made yesterday, and it saved me mad time with great results. I often wonder how you put up with these types of snarky comments- I say screw 'em. You can't please everyone, and you are pleasing a lot of others with your frequent posting. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to read- and they could even unsubscribe without telling you about it if they weren't major turds. It's your blog- do what you like, and thanks for all you do! You are absolutely fabulous :)
ReplyDeleteAJA, I think it's inappropriate to call another commenter nasty names. The person who commented on the volume of Gertie's posts did so after Gertie *specifically asked for reader feedback* about The Daily Dress feature and the blog in general, and was perfectly kind about it, unlike yourself.
ReplyDeleteI echo others' comments that I would welcome an RSS feed of the sewing-only content if you decide to widen your scope, otherwise I will probably unsubscribe. I don't say this as any kind of threat, nor with the desire to be unpleasant. I think you're a great lady and I'm glad to know that you're out there in the world being awesome. I simply have a limited amount of time and prefer to limit my blog reading to certain topics. I wish you luck in all your future plans.
How mysterious! I hope that whatever is happening, that it makes you happy. I enjoy reading your blog, especially as your perspective is often different to mine, and because your blog gives me a glimpse of life in the States. It's like taking a little holiday! So please keep writing whatever gives you satisfaction. Best wishes from the UK
ReplyDeleteDo what you feel is right, write what you want to write about. I've just had an (anonymous) criticism for NOT talking about the politics of sewing enough, and directed the commenter to in-depth discussions sparked off by your blog, as I feel that that is your niche and what you do best. (Well, one of the things you do best. You do other things best too.) Your blog is an inspiration, so keep on doing what you feel is right - it's worked so far!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you've had an exciting week - best of luck!
I love how much you post. I really appreciate it, and I adore reading all of your writing. Haters gonna hate, my friend, but don't mind them, the rest of us are in love.
ReplyDeleteI ended up quitting WordPress, because I go so frustrated with it. I had it installed on a web host, and couldn't find a gallery plugin that worked well.
ReplyDeleteI ended up moving over to http://squarespace.com which I love! It's pretty easy to work with, and lots of ways to customize how things look without even having to touch the code.
A 20 hour outage can happen anywhere you go.. Just part of dealing with the internet.
Looking forward to the new things you're planning on. :)
I love the increased posting - you've found some really great dresses for the Daily Dress (loved the umbrella dress!) and your sewing advice is always fantastic! Can't wait to see what you do in the future. :)
ReplyDeleteGertie, I can only echo what others have said and say write about whatever interests you. You do a fantastic job with your blog - I was initially drawn by your sewing but also the way you interpret vintage styles and make them your own. I have enjoyed the Daily Dress posts, but can't say I have read every one of them, largely depending on my own schedule and also whether the topic interests me. Isn't that is the whole wonderful thing about blogging - it's all voluntary, there should be no compulsion either to post in a particular way, or to read absolutely everything that everyone puts out!
ReplyDeleteKeep doing what you do - you do it so excellently and are a unique and wonderful voice in blogland.
I think your posting rate is actually quite wonderful! I wish I could keep up with you, as I'm sure many of us do. But that's seriously the beauty of your blog. Your creativity, style, and penchant is brought to us every single day and there is something to be said for that. Yes, I look forward to you posting about your latest sewing projects and tips, but I also get to see more snippets of your personality through the other things you post rather than just about your sewing exploits. That's something I need to do more of.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you are thinking of migrating over to wordpress, I'll have you know that I just did it and I love it! It's been a trip and I've had serious complications, but something that I ultimately do not regret. I was just saying to today that plugins are one of the coolest things EVER! Best of luck!
xoxo,
Sunni
Gertie - I absolutely L.O.V.E your blog ! I have read it religiously for well over a year and you have been my inspiration many times over. YOU. COULD. NEVER. post too much for my liking, and I love the fact that you mix it up with different features.
ReplyDeleteSurely our blogs reflect us as people, and none of us are so one dimensional that we could only write about one topic.
Your skill at sewing brought me to your blog, and it's your diversity into other subjects that keeps me reading and holds my interest. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. Love, K xx
Ok, I have a confession to make. When I first saw pics of you modeling your lovely dresses, I thought at first that your tatoos were fabric and was amazed at how close-fitting you got the sleeves. Once i put my glasses on and blew up the screen, I admired you for you. I still do. I enjoy reading your weekly blogs, your sewing tips and showing off your work. I learn from your examples on your blogs of fashion and style examples.
ReplyDeleteGertie - what ever you do, you will do it the Gertie way and I'm along for the wonderful ride!
Jen in So. Cal.
Woot Woot I'm on board for the ride I am a sewer which brought me to your blog but your writings have kept me here!! Go get um Gertie!
ReplyDeleteI think there's a balance of posts. I agree that I would rather follow a blog that is regularly updated. I don't mind a few posts a day. However, there is a local business that I like and liked on Facebook, and even though I love the business and their products, I hid their posts because they post up to twenty times a day. That would be too much...not that it sounds like you have time for that!
ReplyDeleteAnd one of the reasons I like your multiple posts is because of the variety of content. People with only one interest are usually very boring to talk to or to read.
Well, I'm sure that writing a book has left you with less time to sew, and less to say because of that. I assume that when your book writing is over, that you will be writing more sewing-related posts for us. And as for the Daily Dress, if I don't want to read it, I don't. It's not like anyone is standing over me, forcing me to read it! I say forget all the criticism and do what makes you happy!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to say that I use Wordpress and I LOVE it! Also, my husband is a web app developer (which is fancy way to say that he builds websites for a living) and all his company ever uses is Wordpress.
i just found your blog a week or so ago and i really enjoy it. honestly? i usually unsub from blogs that are strictly all sewing all the time -- they are boring.
ReplyDeleteSounds exciting. I didn't know it could get any better than this. Looking forward to the new and improved Gertie. You go, Girl.
ReplyDeleteI trust that I will enjoy whatever it is you decide to blog about - your style is effortless and chic and always a pleasure to read! I look forward to it :)
ReplyDeleteGertie, this is my favourite blog and I adore how your blog has developed. Sometimes I only have time to read one blog in a day and it is always yours. Or, at work if I am have an exceptionally bad day, (too many for my liking lately), I will look at your blog during my lunch break and it helps me get through the day.
ReplyDeleteIt is a fabulous blog and those who can't move forward with your vision can move on if they choose.
More Gertie is Good. I look forward to more of your opinions, ideas, musings and tutorials.
ReplyDeleteT.xxx
that's hilarious that someone said they would stop reading cause you post too much. Do they not realize they don't need to read the blog as much. HA! Keep on bloggin!
ReplyDeleteGertie, it is your blog and you should take it in whatever direction you like. You might lose readers, but you might gain a whole lot more in this new direction you're going. I do feel like you seem to have abandoned the whole original project with the Vogue book, which is what had me following you from the beginning. Do you plan to complete that?
ReplyDeleteYou're taking on projects and growing this blog in an exponential fashion and I'm glad we're all along for the ride, getting to watch over your shoulder as you go!
Don't you worry, Gertie, I love everything you post, and enjoy everything, from the technique to the daily dress, sew alongs, pattern suggestions & advice, and photos of you and your cats. I say more posts, yay!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, no matter how varied the posts become (I think we have similar interests, so I'm always interested!) I've been blogging for 6 years now, and my blog has evolved over time. There is always someone who will be unhappy, but it's so important that you enjoy what you're doing! I've never unsubscribed for too many posts (though I do get behind on some... never yours!)
ReplyDeleteI also love the extra posts! I just started sewing, and while I love to see technique stuff, I also have really loved the real-world things that you look at through the lens of someone who sews, as you said. I read this blog often, and with one of my friends with whom I've been sewing, when we run into a sewing challenge covered by your blog I often start sentences with "Gertie said...". We also love the women and body issues you bring up because they're great discussion starters. I really enjoy the content of this blog, and you shouldn't feel bad about anyone who says they don't like it!
ReplyDeleteI love the variety and frequency of posts on your blog, and to me you always have something interesting to say! As someone who is new to making my own clothes, I find the daily dress and it's accompanying posts interesting and inspirational. Blog in the way that You feel passionate about, because enthusiasm is catching!
ReplyDeleteI got into your blog as a sewing blog, but I really love the new features. I really don't think you're posting too much, as your posts are always interesting and in a manageable size. I appreciate the daily dress, partly because you've become my portal (and filter) into celebrity fashion. Which is exciting because no matter what I feel about the people I'm always interested in well made garments.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say - I really enjoy your regular posting plus your dress a day posts. I find them really entertaining and I would not want you to stop doing them!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog through Twitter and I'm really impressed. Funny, my gf (who is pregnant) mentioned last nite she's thinking of taking up knitting to pass the time, which I realize isn't exactly sewing... but I also kinda really dig your glasses. Our secret. Blog away!
ReplyDeleteI think more is better, think big, be really ambitious. You've got the goods, go for it.
ReplyDeleteSomeone complained about you posting too much? Seriously? LOL. I swear some people find the stupidest things to complain about. I love your posts and it makes me happy that most of your posts have actual content.
ReplyDeleteIt's your blog, do what you want with it. I understand that reader input is important but in the end, it's still your blog.
I've never been able to keep up with the cool kids, so I have trouble understanding why someone would follow so many blogs that they get aggravated because there are too many posts. It seems rather more their own doing than the fault of the blogger.
ReplyDeleteI myself am a generalist, and don't mind seeing lots of different subtopics in your blog. It's always nice to have additional sources of inspiration.
The bottom line is, it's YOUR blog. Follow your own interests in the direction they take you.
Don't forget that whilst you might lost some people who only want to read about sewing, there are others (like me!) who started off with an interest in the sewing but also have similar interests in others areas. AND we're nosy enough to want to read everything! You can't please everyone, so just try to please yourself :) Emma
ReplyDeleteGertie - Your blog is THE one I read every day. I love the tangents into fashion, fashion history, your research, the daily dress, and, of course, the sewing. Bring it all on, girl!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for more of your big news.
What did she mean? "Post too much"? I guess I just wouldn't read every post if I didn't want to. I mean if you, for example, didn't like "the daile dress" - well just don't open that post, silly! How hard can that be?
ReplyDeleteBut so far I've read every single one of your posts Gertie and the only thing I miss is the steady stream of projects from the VoNBBS. You don't post too much! But this was a long comment so now I'll be off.
i dont think that you post too much and that seems to be the concensus from the comments that i read. i wish you had time to post more, lol. anyway good luck cant wait to hear the news
ReplyDeleteYou are great, and I'm loving all your new features and posts, and possibly your posts on the intersection of fashion and feminism the most of all! So carry on, I say! And best wishes with the big changes.
ReplyDeleteI have plenty of books full of sewing tech - I love your blog because you put your personality into it and because it brings together a community of people whose interests often match my own.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you could ever post "too much" for my taste, and I love the daily dress! I don't really subscribe to celebrity culture but I always love a good dress. I think you do an excellent job of balancing red carpet dresses with examples from elsewhere.
Keep it up, and I'm excited for the changes!
I like all the components of your blog. Mix it up and I will still follow. Whatever you decide, best of luck. The blog world is growing and changing all the time. I think set the pace, keep up or stay the same. Each blog has its own personality. Yours addresses many segments of sewing. Inspiration, trends, history, it's all good.

ReplyDeleteOops! must proof read first!. What I was trying to say was:
ReplyDeleteIt will be sad to lose readers, but the reason you create the blog is for you, right? Not purely to get readers? But... If you're taking input I love the daily dress! I also like they're not all celebrity dresses. Like the umbrella dress? Awesome!
Can't wait to hear about the changes!

Only 20.5 hours? I'm sure it was longer than that. It felt longer on this side of the world, at least.
ReplyDeleteAmazed you can manage 2 posts a day, but I have no problem with you posting about things other than sewing technique. Pictures of cats whose heads smell faintly of honey are always welcome.
I can't believe someone would leave a comment with the express reason of telling you she would no longer subscribe due to number of posts.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fanny.
Don't listen Gertie - post all day every day and your real fans will lap it up. We love what you do.

My tu'pennce ha'penny:
ReplyDelete1p: Blogs change over time, just like anything else. If your blog is maturing into a wider style blog (instead of just a sewing blog) then that's what it's doing. I'm here because I like reading your take on things, not just because I want to read sewing technique posts.
2p: Post ... too ... much? Girlfriend, you're a blogger. So long as the posts are full of good content, there is no such thing as too much.
Ha'penny: My own blog is on Blogger, too, and I had to laugh at all the screaming about Blogger being read-only for a day. You would have thought the sky was falling instead of one small portion of the internet being inaccessible. Still, it's funny how you miss it when it isn't there.
It's your blog - do with it as you wish. While I may not be interested in every topic you write on, I know that I'll continue to read you. I find that even when you write about something I may not be into, it typically gets me thinking. So, right on, writing on!
ReplyDeleteI want to offer some words of support- I like your frequent posts and would love it if you even posted MORE often! Keep the great writing coming.

ReplyDeleteI have only been reading this blog for a few weeks, but I look at it almost every day now. I really appreciate your point of view. I think you should do what makes you happy. I personally would be interested in reading about a wider rage of topics, and call me crazy, but if I came across a post that didn't interest me - I just wouldn't read it. Seems simple enough to me.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog and don't mind at all when there is more to read. I get bummed when there are no new posts, so keep uhm coming! The only thing that ever seems like too much is when people (not you) tweet over and over and over and over again about the same blog post.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new reader, and I LOVE the mix of pop culture etc. with sewing!
ReplyDeleteHi Gertie!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for about a year now, and you are thus far one of my favourite bloggers. Sewing, feminism, pop culture, fashion etc, I love it all. I'm very exited to hear your new plans for the blog and I'm very confident I'll be are reader in the future also.
However, I've been thinking a lot of why The Daily Dress feature seems to bug me a bit, even though it should interest me. I think it's very much because lately I've felt that every time I open the site, it's daily dress, and not so much you're sewing projects or ponderings of ie. body images or feminism. I also really miss Gerite, the Girl Reporter feature.
I think my main concern is that going big you loose your own voice in a way that it's not so much a blog and a public journal anymore (so to speak) but more like a one woman's sewing magazine with unpresonal snippets of celebrity culture, sewing tips etc.
It doesn't really sound like you would go to that direction, and I think you're such a warm person, that it will shine trough no matter what, but I just wanted to voice my concerns, since there has been talk about the direction of this blog.
