The Daily Dress: Rhubarb Harvest

Isn't this little dress so adorable? I just love the scoop neck and the kimono sleeves, which have an interesting lantern-like shape. After much close inspection on ModCloth, it looks like they have an underarm gusset that extends into the short sleeve.
The dress is cotton with tiny polka dots and a floral back sash.
Something about the demure shape of it reminds me of Maria's dresses in West Side Story.
It's also rather similar to this vintage pattern.

Do you know of other patterns with a similar kimono sleeve shape? Do tell!

  1. Hi Gertie,

Cute dress! I'm getting ready to sew a Vogue Vintage pattern (circa 1953) that has a kimono sleeve shape and underarm gusset. It's Vogue 1043. I'm going to make it in a ivory stretch satin with pink flowers.

  2. Interesting sleeve! It's like a short bell sleeve. More sophisticated than a puffed sleeve, but with a similar sweetness.

  3. That dress is so cute! I'd love one just like it. The vintage pattern is really nice, but did women really have waists that small??

  4. I love the way that sash looks! that could look very cute tied at the front too - in fact on my figure, it would probably look better :)

  6. Love the shape of that dress! Call me crazy, but I have been looking at Simplicity 2591, which I recently purchased, and I think you might get a very similar feel by combining elements of the different views of that pattern. No kimono sleeve in the pattern, but the raglan version has a sleeve shape that's similar, with pleats at the cuff.

  7. Hi Gertie,
I am going to make EvaDress 9072, a 1950's blouse. It has underarm gussets and darts along the top of the shoulders (dart seams). I was wondering if any of your readers have made this pattern up. I would love to see how it looks on someone else.

  9. Adorable dress! I might just have to make a pattern based on that dress... =) I love the skirt and the sleeves, but I'd make the back a bit different. As cute as the sash is, it isn't for me.

  10. Such a tremendously cute dress! I adore red clothing (which sometimes surprises people given my red locks, but I've found that the two can actually work great together, especially if I opt for items of clothing with blue reds) and would sport it in a heartbeat!

    Joyful Tuesday wishes,

  11. This dress is super cute! I have two patterns with k-sleeves but not poofy like this. (Butterick 7990 which has a similar neckline and Simplicity 2847 which has a bias panel for side/underarm that i've always wanted to try) Would love to see what you come up with if you decide to make this :)

  12. So pretty! It's hard to find sleeves that are just the extension of the body without looking like batwings. I'm having flashbacks of a batwing top I had circa 1983...the underarm started at the hem of the shirt. No no no, that is I what I want to avoid and I want something like this instead. :)

  13. I have a couple of vintage dresses with kimono sleeves, and they fit my narrow shoulders really well, which I appreciate. I also have a great dress from Isaac Mizrahi's Target line that's surprisingly vintage-looking-- it's got underarm gussets in the kimono sleeve, rickrack trim and a midriff band.

If anyone here is a regular thrift-store shopper, I'd recommed you keep an eye out for those IM for Target dresses-- I have half a dozen different ones now, all thrifted, and they have great vintage style.
