I considered renaming this the Daily Brooch for today, because that's what I'm getting out of this picture: MUST. HAVE. GIANT. BROOCH.
A couple days ago, Dita Von Teese tweeted "Wardrobe dept at @WendyWilliams came at me with the intention of censoring my cleavage w/scraps of lace... #STEPAWAYfromtheRolandMouret." Ha! I tried to imagine what Mouret dress would be so provacative, and then these pictures were released. Sure, it's pretty low-cut but she is, you know, a burlesque dancer. I would think you might expect some raciness from that sort of guest.
In any case, I think she looks absolutely amazing in these pictures. I love the sort of poppy red color of the dress; it's a little more interesting than a true red. And the brooch. I want that damn brooch!
I'm liking OOP McCall's 5269 pattern as a similar look (with a TV appropriate neckline, too!). It's similar to Vogue 8280, but with fewer fussy details.

ReplyDeleteI've liked some of the other 'daily dresses' you've posted but this is the first I've though 'Oooo I'd wear that!' (But yeah maybe with a little lace applique or something across the cleavage area. It would be very glamorous in red or some other deep jewel tone like turquoise.

ReplyDeleteLove it. Only somehow, much as I may love it, the dress seems to flatten her bottom a bit. Otherwise, it is perfect on her (as is everything else she wears, it seems).

ReplyDeleteIt's a great dress and she always wears that color well but am I the only one who thinks it's too small? Those pull lines across the midriff and hips say to me that dress wasn't fitted especially for her. Unless she always wears things too tight.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I'm totally with you. I had to enlarge the picture to see if it was gathered, or just a wee too small. I'm going with a wee too small...and I speak from experience here. I know that gathering when I see it in my own clothes. Must. Fit. Into. Marc. Jacobs. Yeah, celebrities are just like us! When they want to wear a dress that they love but is a wee snug, they wear it anyways!
ReplyDeleteOh my god, I LOVE IT! if only I was a burlesque dancer and could actually go out showing that much cleavage. I'm not at all a prude and frequently wear things that are pretty darn low, but I think with my boobs that might prove a little too much!
ReplyDeleteBut otherwise, maybe a slightly less low version, I WANT ONE! I shall have to see what I've got in the pattern drawer.. Not sure about the fabric choice for something that tight though... wouldn't want to make something that fabulous and fall into the picked the wrong stretch fabric and it went instantly baggy at the ass problem...
I have been drooling over this entire look since it popped up on one of the Dita blogs I follow. ;) Especially the giant brooch--I am definitely thinking I need to add something big and sparkly into my jewelry box! :D

I've made that dress! (It's actually the very first garment I ever made...) I love the pattern, but wish I'd done a better job when I fitted it. It wouldn't be my first thought for the Dita dress, but I can see how it could work...
ReplyDeleteFYI, I meant I made the McCalls pattern. I've always loved that Vogue one too, and I think it actually might be a bit closer to Dita's than the McCalls one...

ReplyDeleteDita does the slightly risque look better than anyone--elegant heels, downright demure hemline, granny brooch (fabulous vintage!!). Only the cleavage is extreme, if you could even call it that. It draws attention because it is well showcased. Sooo much sexier than teeny, reveal-all outfits.
I made the McCalls pattern in a red linen with a lacey red/glitter bottom in the "B" style. The pattern fits my larger frame very well, but I didn't like the neckline. The sleeves were also too tight. The problem with the neckline is that you cannot wear a bra with straps with this garment. The edges of the neckline extende all the way to the armpits even though it doesn't really look like. When I tried to modify it by having them come in a little it changed the silouette (sp) so you didn't get a nice curvy figure. If your comfortable wearing a strapless bra and have large breats this pattern is wonderful. But for the big boned small breats (I have size b) the top can be a bit overwhelming. Just my opinion.

What I really like about Dita Von Teese is that she manages to be both modern and vintage at once (Mouret dress with granny pin) - a propos for a modern burlesque star.

ReplyDeleteLuv the look - wish I had the *assets* for the original neckline LOL! I have both the McCall's 5269 and the Vogue 8280 in my stash. The 8280 is much used of course as the RM Galaxy knock-off. The real Galaxy has a corselette inside it of course ;)!
