The Daily Dress: Immodesty Blaize

Look, a new blog feature! This is an idea I've been cooking up for a while, and there's clearly no better time to launch a new venture than April Fool's Day. I love looking at red carpet and PR photos, even if I have no clue what the event is. (Heard of the "Triumph Inspiration Awards," anyone?) We all know that most celebs will attend the opening of an envelope if it means they'll get their picture taken, and that means . . . DRESSES!

In the interest of building this site into a place where you can waste even more time online, I'll regularly be posting hot-off-the-presses dress photos from fashion shows, red carpets, and publicity events, no matter how insignificant or gauche.

Today's edition of The Daily Dress features burlesque performer Immodesty Blaize at the Inspiration Triumph Awards in London. Don't you love the vintage silhouette, sheer embroidered fabric, scalloped edge, and use of a sheer underlining?
At the after party, she changed into something a little more dramatic.

Gotta love burlesque performers.

Anyhoo, welcome to The Daily Dress! I hope you will feel free to share your thoughts (fawning, snarky, thoughtful, whatever) on the dresses featured. Update! I should have specified that this new feature is in addition to regular sewing posting, not in lieu of it. Yay!

  1. Very pretty dress! I do really like the nude underlining. :]

  2. That dramatic dress is great. A burlesque performer's depiction of Venus? She probably has the best Halloween costumes...

  3. Meh. I don't like the black/nude dress because of the all-overness. However, I do like the style of it and I also like black-over-nude dresses.

  4. Love the first dress totally. But doesn't it cut a bit toooooo tight under the arms....;)(Is that what you mean by "snarky"?? ;)

  5. In the hopes of not being snarky, I hope this is an April Fools. If you start filling my reader with celeb pics instead of sewing, I'm gonna have to unsubscribe.

  6. I'm saying "Yes!" to the Daily Dress. This is a cute little number! Very modest for someone named "Immodesty". She looks a little like Kylie Minogue. (a good thing!)

  7. The Triumph Inspiration Awards is an international competition for Contour Students (lingerie). I guess the brief is to push the boundaries of underwear. The theme year is '125 of designing for women'?

  8. That's a great dress.... it would be flattering and comfortable to so many different shapes and sizes... and look good in so many fabrics.

I like the dress a day idea. If the dress comes with a celebrity, that's ok too.

  9. Sort of reminds me of the stripper, Blaze Starre, who performed in the French Quarter for years. I do love it when a voluptuous women is held up as a sexual object. Sure beats the fashionable likes of Mary Kate and Ashley.

  10. As a professional stylist and make-up artist, I say the first outfit gets a big thumbs down from me. The whole look is too monotone. From her hair color, to her skin tone, her pale lip, the lining of the dress and even the shoes are all the same color family and almost all the same shade. AND I agree with Miss P that it's cut too tight in underarm. The second dress is also not quite right. It looks like it's a size or 2 too small. Her breasts are popping out but not in a good way. It looks like the lace is hanging on to the top of the bodice for dear life. I've don't my fair share of sewing for and dressing drag performers, so I'm familiar with other the top performers, I just don't think these looks work.

  11. One word: scary! Especially that last photo :o
    (just my humble opinion)

  12. Woweee! Now those are a couple dresses to run from! First dress so-so but way too tight at pits! Second dress, only a burlesque could get away with that!

Great finds and I love the theme! xoxo Beth

  13. I agree... the first dress is lovely but cut way too tight under the arms. The second photo... does this woman have any ribs? That looks like it hurts!

  14. It's funny how modestly she is dressed in the first picture. The neck is high and the hem is low. No cleavage, no legs above the knee.

  15. I am with Jenny R though and hope that you will keep the content of this blog overwhelmingly on sewing.

  16. Judging from the responses to your first dresses, a dress a day could encourage discussion of style, fit, etc. and could inspire us.

  17. Wow, I've heard that British women are seriously into foundation garments / corsetry. That second outfit seems to bear this out. Can't you just see her holding on to the bedpost (a la Scarlett O'Hara) while Mummy pulls on the laces? "Tighter, Mummy!" she gasps. "I've got to get down to 17 inches!" Just looking at it makes my ribcage feel constricted.

  18. She is one of the biggest and best burlesque performers in the world. The second "dress" is a costume from her act. I firmly believe that in order to properly judge a burlesque performer's attire(on or off stage) one must understand the burlesque culture. Maybe post photos of "street" clothes versus costuming.

  19. Very nice, I LOVE the scalloped edging!

  20. Immodesty is always immaculate. I love the first look, although I see the point about it being a bit high cut under the arms.

The second look. Not sure it's fair to judge perfomance wear in fashion terms. It is very corsetted, so no, not too small. Although the cups might be a little undersized, it's hard to tell from her position. It's well shaped over her ribs so it won't be hurting her there either. Custom corsets aren't uncomfortable. Also Immodesty has a figure shape which lends itself to corsetting and gives a pretty high impact.

I'd point out too that corsets are equally popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Look at Dita von Teese for instance, who always wears a corset for performances.

  21. LOVE everything Burlesque!
But am I the only one wodering if now-a-days Burelsque artists and women in the '40-'50 use(d) waits-training corsets to geth that incredible wasp-waist??!!

  22. I love this dress! I agree that it seems too tight under her arms, but I love the silhouette and shape!

  23. I have to agree with the comment that she is to monotone. A red lip, hat and heels could have at least brought something to the party. I do like the performance gown though. I always make sure to judge a costume, and performance makeup as that. Love the corset action, that's some dramatic cinching! I would love to see the layers that costume is made up of. I will have to check this girl out!

  24. I've liked Immodesty Blaize ever since seeing her on a BBC programme in which appropriate 'celebs' had to defend a specific era of fashion. Hers of course was the 40s. I'd always dismissed her as a bit of a burlesque bimbo but she soon proved me wrong, not only is she bright but she's interesting and really knows her stuff. The top dress is nice here (although not sure about the blonde hair on her; dark suits her so much better).

  25. Hi, Gertie! Random question: Where/how did you learn about different types of fabrics and what they are called? I am about to buy a copy of "J.J. Pizzuto's Fabric Science Swatch Kit" by Allen C. Cohen, Arthur Price, & Ingrid Johnson--is this something you would recommend? Thank you for your help!

Thanks for your comments; I read each and every one! xo Gertie
