Today's dress comes to us not from a red carpet, but from the pages of last month's InStyle magazine. They had a great feature on Dita Von Teese and her home. It was chock full of lovely photos and lovely dresses, but this is the one that stood out most to me. In fact, I remember thinking, "I really need a pink satin dress."
The magazine called this dress a "modern take on a vintage design," and it's perfectly complemented by the vintage brooches. (Not to mention the drool-worthy platters of sweets and the lovely vintage tablecloth.)

Isn't it interesting how this hardly seems like a "modern take on a vintage design" in the picture above? Sometimes it really is all about the styling!
Wow, I would never have thought of that as a bridesmaid dress. You're so right about the styling. I even find that the case on my own self. I've come to realize I really have to do my makeup and get dressed before I style my hair, because otherwise sometimes I do a double take and think my hair looks 70s not closer to 40s. Yoikes!
ReplyDeletei love the wallpaper too. x
ReplyDeleteoh, the weird waist brooch and mood lighting TOTALLY change that dress. went from want to want to run away.
ReplyDeleteyour daily dress posts are making me want to try my and at shiny, slippery fabric again-- i just turned a burda pattern into a vintage look with some of the stuff, but it took me three years. literally. i'm kind of scarred. and i guess scared too.
OH I loved that shoot! I was drooling over those pictures for days. Love the dress, but you will never catch me in light pink satin, I'm far to olive skinned. I adore the skirt pleats though, I think I'm going to flip through that issue one more time...
ReplyDeleteYou are SO right about the pink satin dress... the next time I can go fabric shopping I am definitely going to pick up some rosy yardage
ReplyDeleteLove this! Oh, to look so good!
ReplyDeleteI remember my Mother wearing a dress like this during the holidays in the late 50'd early 60's. Satin finish brocades were all the rage. Great memories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference! It just shows how much styling does matter.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'd have the confidence to wear something quite so pink (I only recently adopted it as a colour, so I still need time...) but I absolutely love this dress. On Dita though, not on the model where the styling ruins it.
ReplyDeleteVery true with clothing being all aboout styling. Before I started transitioning my wardrobe into mor pinup pieces, I would wear modern clothing with vintage hair and makeup and still get told that I looked like I'd stepped straight out of the 50s. It's all about the styling!
ReplyDeleteIt does look totally different...the waist brooch on the bottom photo reminds me of--does anyone remember about five years ago when those handkerchieffy faux-wrap tops with the bell sleeves were really popular? The ones at Wal-Mart always had strange sequiny patch things like that over the "closure" of the wrap.
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, far far from what Ms. von Teese looks like she's wearing.
The styling really makes all the difference. I love Dita. Thanks for posting about this dress! It is lovely.
ReplyDeleteNever mind the dress, look at her wallpaper! Emma :)
