This Pretty Much Sums It Up

My life, that is. Fabric, glorious fabric! It's especially appropriate that these tubs have taken the place on the wall where I usually photograph my finished garments. You see, I've been in the thick of making the patterns for my book, testing them, and getting ready to stitch them up in these lovely fabrics. So of course I haven't had a moment to make anything to actually model. I hope the sight of this fabric bounty will make up for that a little.

The super exciting thing is that B&J Fabrics is providing all the fabric for the book. They are my absolute favorite store in New York's Garment District, and they've been generous beyond belief. They're even cataloging all the fabrics I'm using online so that you can order the same once the book comes out! In the meantime, I highly recommend their Liberty of London section, which is the largest Liberty selection online.

Here's Pip guarding the fabric. She knows the good stuff when she sees it.

So yeah. Life is good over here. What have you all been sewing?

  1. hi Gertie!
I'm so looking forward to your book, you will make sure to have international shipping options won't you? I've been sewing a 50's dress, though my fabric, unlike your glorious selection, was a curtaining offcut!

  3. hi
i can't wait for your book, please make it available internationally :-). it is already hard enough to get sewing books here in europe.
i am recycling some clothes my mum gave me, that she was going to put into the clothes bin, into pants for my nearly four year old twin girls. saves money and materials and keeps me busy in the evening:-)

  5. Hi Gertie,
I have the same bin system myself. I've been working on a Spring Balero Jacket with a pleated accent ruffle. The fabric was a real find at savathon on 104th and Third avenue in Manhattan. They have a good collection of notions if your in a pinch and live uptown. Happy Sewing.

  6. Gertie, I couldn't be more excited for your book! I've been sewing two shirts which I finished this weekend, and now I'm working on Angela Kane's free pinafore pattern while I wait for some patterns to come from Simplicity! http://strugglesewsastraightseam.wordpress.com/

  7. At the moment, I am finishing up a McCalls NYNY dress using a stretch wool blend from Paron's Annex. The only thing that is going to save this dress are the shoulder pads.

  8. Great tip on Libery of Londons fabrics. ClubBVM.com is having a Libery of Londons fabric giveaway this week.

  9. I've been putting off hemming two different skirts, each of which I otherwise finished at least a week ago...because I've promised myself that the next thing I'll do is the giant pile of very practical, very dull mending I've accumulated by the sewing table!

  10. I have been busy turning regular skirts into maternity skirts.

I finally have some photos up of my baby bump and my thoughts on being pregnant at 46.

    Can't wait for your book.

  11. Hi Gertie. I can't wait to see the garments those tubs of fabric become! I'm muslining a Butterick dress these days. It's amazing how much more confident I feel in changing things after walking through the Crepe fitting with you. Looking forward to your book.

  12. Ohhhhh... cannot wait to see the book that you are working so hard on :) Always best to have fabric in a sealed box when there is a cat around - mine tend to make a bed out of it before I can say "get away from my fabric bounty!!!"

Sewing? Nadda. I need to get back into the "i could make this myself" frame of mind!

  13. This is all good! I've been organizing my stash this week and feel like I have not been able to sew a thing. I can't imagine what I book would do to derail my sewing. Looking forward to getting the book for myself and the store!

  14. so exciting! I always have trouble picking the perfect fabric for each pattern. I love the fabrics so much, I just can't decide.

I'm working on a Cynthia Rowley sundress with Alexander Henry lawn.

  15. Oooh, can I second (third?) the comment about international shipping? I can't wait till your book is published!

At the moment, I've just finished sewing a black cotton circle skirt that took me far too long to finish and I'm now starting to learn how to sew with knits. As a final-year student with exams coming up, I need projects I can finish quickly!

  16. I am so inspired by sewing as of late! I just finished 2 dresses and am now half way through this Vogue Vintage apron, the polka dotted onehttp://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8643-products-10785.php?page_id=174
I am making it from some Michael Millare fabric from the Poppies Collection. I loved the fabric so muc, I can't wait to wear it!

  17. Gertie, I think I may have seen you at B&J a few weeks back but wasn't positive if it was you at the time. B&J has a breathtaking selection of silk and velvet. I am not sure if my sewing skills are up to that caliber of fabric but I'm sure you'll produce some amazing pieces.

  18. go, Pip!
Dare I admit this in a public place? The most recent thing I sewed was a mending job on a pair of pj pants. Picture floral cotton pique patched up with a chunk of muslin and sewn with a black zig-zag stitch. Yeah, cute!

  19. I have to say I love your site! And can't wait for your book to hit the bookshelves.

I just finished my children's aprons and currently working on their coloring book/crayon fabric storage binder thingy. :)

  21. Liberty of London makes jersey? Jersey!! Um that is about the coolest thing I could imagine. I won't be able to think of much else for at least an hour.

  22. I envy your fabric stash! I'm working on a Sencha blouse in a gorgeous green color of an absolutely hideous fabric. I must pay more attention to fiber content when shopping online...

  23. ;) What have I been sewing? Last thing was a pair of tiny (10 inch length) cargo pants with butterflies...long story. What I need to be sewing is the March Dare for my sewing group: a skirt to be worn on Sunday April 3. http://sewdaring.blogspot.com

Looking forward to the book.....and loving all the vicarious fun in the meantime! k.

I am sewing a dress for my mother right now, a beautiful purple wrap dress. You will be able to see the progress on my blog!

  25. Can't wait to see the book!

I'm making a million hats and fascinators for my stall at an alternative wedding fayre this weekend, finishing some repro bengaline wiggle dresses for a friend I do freelance piece work for, and planning my summer wardrobe sewing projects!

I'm planning a blog post about the planned garments, as soon as I get time to go through my fabrics! x

  26. How very exciting! I look very much forth to you book, and I have to say that I'm so proud of you also!
I'm trying to get over my sewing block/meltdown and dealing with sewing time when having a quite new BF in my house... It's so nice to sew when there's company, but it's all a balance. Anyway, I'm making a 3/4-skirt with lovely pockets. Hopefully I'll finish it today and blog later! Please come by, Gertie!

  27. I am working on my Spring line of scrub tops. Being an ER nurse I have to wear professional attire. Luckily Simplicity and New Look have provided several patterns. As soon I finish these, I plan to work on some other spring and summer frocks.

  28. I'm really looking forward to your book, Gertie!! How lovely to be able to play with all that fabric.

I love the Black Apple prints I see hanging there, too! :)

  29. I'm unsure about the tea length. I am short, so I think it is hard to pull off. I also remember watching a documentary on Dior where he commented a woman's ankles are vulgar when wearing a gown. That made me kind of self conscious. Maybe in the right dress I could pull it off.
