Ruby Satin

Hey, here it is! I'm writing this late at night after my Black Tie event, but wanted to update with a few pictures. This is Vogue 1176, made strapless and floor-length. The fabric is a ruby-colored Vera Wang satin.
My mom (and dad) gave me the absolute perfect necklace for Christmas. How did she know? Mom-related sixth sense, I guess.

There are 16 rows of boning holding this baby up.
Evidently the dress code was actually "creative black tie." Yeah, I was waaaay overdressed. Whatever.
It's not quite right without glasses, is it?

The all-important butt view.
More details on the pattern to come, if you're interested.

A big shout-out to Jeff, who planned and hosted this entire event while extremely sick. Everyone, now: feel better, Jeff!

  7. Beautiful! I love how the dress and your tattous work together, almost making it a sleeved dress =) I'm so impressed that you managed to make it in time, that was some fast sewing!
    Hope Jeff gets well soon.

  18. That looks amazing! I love the bust wrap/bow detail, very nice. I hope people saw what you were wearing and felt ashamed at how underdressed they were :)

  19. Talk to me Harry Winston, tell me all about it! Truly gorgeous, and like Casey I can't wait to hear some of your thoughts on construction, especially working with a satin. I only wish there was a picture with your parka accent!

I hope Jeff feels better soon.

    Feel better, Jeff!

  23. A stunning dress! Great fit, texture and colour. You look amazing. What exactly is creative black tie? Perhaps your exposed tatoos with a classic black tie dress count as creative? Sort of classic with a twist.

  24. Stunning. And the dress works perfectly with your ink.

  28. VaVoom! The dress looks beautiful with your coloring. Your tats give kind of a bolero effect--very interesting! I do like you without glasses for this kind of glam look though, hope you don't mind.

  30. You look so elegant and the dress shows off your tatoos so well!

  31. Beautiful, how do you have time to do anything?

    ReplyDelete
  32. GORGEOUS!! I'm working on a maroon satin gala dress, myself. I'm doubtful that it'll be quite as stunning as yours. And I'm definitely not brave enough for boning yet. Congrats on a job well done! (And hope Jeff feels better, too) :)

  39. I can't decide if you're more Ava Gardner or Rita Hayworth in Gilda, but that is definitely a Gilda-worthy gown. Great job!!! Now I understand what the secrecy was about in which pattern you chose (unless you told your peeps on Facebook and I missed it)

  40. I am sorry to hear that Jeff was sick but if seeing you in this dress didn't make him feel better I don't know what would! Wowza lady!
Great adaptation of that pattern! I love it! It reminds me of the pick evening dress Marilyn Monroe wears in How to Marry a Millionaire.

Hope you both had a lot of fun at the event and get-well soon to Jeff!

  58. You look amazing!! I love the dress, the color, and as lots of others said, it makes your tats look super cool! I would love for a pattern review, or your thoughts on sewing it up. I have the same vogue pattern and was thinking of switching out the pencil skirt for a full/gathered skirt.

  62. Gertie, you look marvelous! Did the instructions from V1167 contain the boning instructions, or did you get them somewhere else?

I like the pattern without straps; I just found it on eBay, and plan to make a boned bodice to go strapless.

  63. WOW!! Both you AND the dress are stunning!

    Get Well Soon Jeff!

  68. Gorgeous! It turned out so well. I'd say with your glasses and all your beautiful ink, you totally fit the "creative black tie" profile! Especially since, HELLO! you created the dress yourself.

  72. Such a fabulous dress, I especially love the bodice. The dress makes me want to host a party right now just to have an excuse to wear something like this.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thanks for all the well wishes guys! I'm still coughing like a maniac but I think it's running it's course.

I have to say that as good as these pics are they don't really do the dress justice. You should have seen it lit by candlelight in the middle of the Museum of Modern Art. It was perfect! Every other woman there was wondering why they were so underdressed.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Feel better Jeff! Absolutely beautiful dress! The color is just perfect! And its always better to be overdressed :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. get well Jeff.

    STUNNING dress. You look fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You look flawless!!! Kudos for such a beautiful looking ensemble. :) Do you think that you might be able to show us the inside of the dress? I'd love to see it.

And hey, it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed, so no biggie. :)

  80. wha? creative black tie? well now we know! I was hoping to see this dress, so thanks for posting. It's lovely, I am astonished that you sewed this with everything else going on, and yes that necklace is perfect!!

My sister has gotten the invitation of a life-time. She gets to attend the Annual Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner in DC (the one where the the President does a comedy routine, then gets roasted, and gobs of famous people kill for invites)
And- she asked me to make her gown. I totally cannot wait!!
    A corselette WILL be involved.

  83. Ohh! Long-time reader, first-time commenter. I always avoided commenting before because I felt like it would get lost in the shuffle of all your (obviously) adoring fans. However, you in this dress literally made me gasp out loud. The dress itself, your hair, your glasses, the lipstick...!! I could go on! You literally epitomize my ideal beauty.

Hope that's not too weird!! Keep being awesome!
