Finished Red Lace Dress!

Here it is! The product of much scheming, muslining, reconsidering, and fancy lace techniques. I didn't get a ton of pictures, but you get the idea.

I wore it with my little white owl brooch—and red lipstick, of course!
I went practical with tights (ignore the run, please) and flats.
I added a coral organza petticoat to peek out, but then decided it was too fussy. So instead, I converted the petticoat to a double ruffle and sewed it to the skirt lining, letting the lace scallops on the hem stand on their own. Fun! And a great excuse to flip up your skirt!
I wore it on Christmas Eve. I knew I was going to be overdressed, but I did not care.
I'm very happy with it, though it's amazing to me how much one can fuss with a pattern and still see room for improvement. It's a process, huh?

Hope all your holiday sewing went well!

  11. I have been thinking about this dress since you posted a picture of it a few weeks ago. You have so inspired me to kick my sewing skills up a few notches. I even went out and bought muslin for the first time!

As my grandmothers would say, "Wear it in good health!"

  13. Love it! I was able to get my Crepe dress done before Christmas! (See it here: http://star-spangledheart.blogspot.com/2010/12/after-christmas-special.html ) I, too, was overdressed for the Christmas festivities, but I'm hoping to inspire others to things beyond jeans and bad xmas sweaters.

  18. I really really love the demure sillouette with the lace. The scalloped hem is particularly charming. I think you should wear it on Valentine's Day with pink tights and pumps. Because pink and red together is fun and pretty!

  22. GORGEOUS! I just love it and your underskirt is so kicky! Fun!

I'm hand-sewing my sequinned fabric I brought back from Italy into a lined tank top with an invisible side zip. It'll be ready for tomorrow night's festivities, even if I have to sew through the night tonight!

  23. I absolutely love your dress!

Right now I am making Charles Folkwear #238 Le Smoking Jacket. The jacket face is burgundy red heavy poly satin and the lining and lapel facing are a lighter silver satin. Fussy.

  24. It's gorgeous on you, and a perfect dress for Christmas Eve!
I do like the matching underlay, by toning down the lace it seems to make it less formal, and more wearable!

  36. Beautiful - and very you!! Yes, I agree with the assertion that it is a process!

I would say in New York you would not have been overdressed, but perhaps in certain parts of the South. . . and dare I say, Florida! I think you look tres chic! Perfect outfit.

  37. Hey Gertie!! Your dress is fabulous! I got to see it up close and in person the other day (pre-christmas!) at Sewing Studio and it was lovelier in person! :)

The color is fabulous on you too! I especially loved the neckline details and the puffy underskirt!

    It fit perfectly too!

Hope you had a lovely holiday and a great new year to come!

  42. Hi Just wanted to say I love the dress it reminds me of the red dress Anna Friel wore for the promotion of Pushing Daises.

  43. I LOVE this. I think that with your pale skin, going with the red on red was a good choice. It looks fabulous. And the practical silhouette tones down the fussiness of the lace nicely. It's dressy enough without going over the top. Nice work!

  44. What basic pattern did you use for this dress? I've been in love with the dress Michelle Williams wore since I first saw it. The cut is fabulous, and I really want to make one like this. Thank you!

  45. I'll ditto another person's comment: this looks like a total knockoff of Anna Friel's Pushing Daising dress - and I mean that in a good, I'm utterly jealous, type of way.

    Great job, awesome dress!
