Braided Up-Do Video Tutorial!
As you've noticed, Heidi braids are one of my favorite ways to do my hair. This is a coiffure that you'll see in many different eras, including early Hollywood glamor - but it also feels very modern. Besides being timelessly classic, and they can pair with formal, casual, and professional looks. Really, it's amazing how versatile this 'do is! Per many requests, here's a video tutorial on how I do mine. Hope you enjoy it!

I just tried to watch your video, because I'm always looking for fun up-dos to keep my hair out of my neck in the warmer months, and I got this message: "This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender's friend request."
ReplyDeleteI hope I can see it soon, and get practicing!
Sade, it should be fixed now. Sorry about that!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I bookmarked this for when my hair gets long enough. I love this style! I also love you lipstick. What shade are you wearing in this video? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat was great! (Transfixing, like watching one's mother put on makeup as a kid.)
ReplyDeleteI have very thick, curly hair. back when I had it long, I loved putting my hair in braids - either just two hanging down, or wrapping them as you do, or coiling them around themselves into two little twisted knobby buns....it was such an easy style for those days when I didn't feel like dealing!
ReplyDeleteNow that my hair is short, my go to style of choice for those days when I'm just bumming around town is pigtails, high on my head. It's perhaps a little slightly ridiculous of a hairstyle for a grown woman, but, you know, whatever! :)
It looks simple enough that I really should try it out one day! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, somehow this was the first video of yours that I've watched, and I like your voice. :-)
The video was great, very easy to follow. Thanks for doing this.
ReplyDeleteWow thanks for that tutorial. I just tried it an it looks great. I have thick curly hair put a few passes with a flatiron made it braid-able.
ReplyDeleteMy skinny hair is jealous of your thick Heidi braids! Cute! Cute! Cute!
ReplyDeleteMy friends call me "Princess Leia light" when I wear my hair like this. :) Thanks so much for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that works with really thick, really long hair. I should just give it a try. It looks so adorable!
ReplyDeleteThanks, all! Glad you like it. :)
ReplyDeleteAndrea, the lipstick is Nars Red Lizard.
Kathleen, if you have longer hair, you can cross your braids in the back before "flooping" them up. That's the classic way to do it!
Thank you! I am always on the look-out for nice up-do's which will work with rather long hair and don't require a third arm. I was afraid my hair would be too long and too thin, but I tried it out and it seems to be working. I just had to tuck in the ends of the braids half way down on the other side of my head.
ReplyDeleteDarling, you are gorgeous! My swiss hubs will love this, I'm sure. For me, not for him.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree that I love your lipstick. I'm still trying to work out how to pull off red lipstick.
Thanks - Cheers!
Daisy
Thanks for the video: you look so cute! My hair is a good length for this, so I'm adding "hair goop" and "bobby pins" to my errands list. Heidi braids will be harder to pull off with my gray hair, but with a little luck /attitude maybe I can rock a "hip granny" look?
ReplyDeleteThanks! That was great!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! Your hair is always one of my favorite parts of your outfits. :)
ReplyDeleteHow much product did you use? Perhaps that fiber gum stuff is the answer to my messy braids.
ReplyDeleteGreat video! Im going to try this for work tomorrow. Im in need of a new style. Im in a bun rut.
ReplyDeleteanotheryarn, I use a good size dollop to coat each braid, and then a smaller dollop to coat my fingers about half-way down the braid. You want a generous amount, but not so much that your hair's all goopy. Play around with it and you'll find what's right for your hair type.
ReplyDeleteI used to do it without the product, and it makes such a difference in keeping things neat and polished!
Venus, I think this will look lovely with your hair color! Go for it. :)
there must be a trend with this sort of hairstyle happening as this Melbourne blogger is doing it too... http://www.ladymelbourne.com.au/2010/06/on-yer-bike/
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't suit me even if I had longer hair, unfortunately! Any tips for the follicly (??) challenged?
I had to try this while watching along! (my hair is just an inch or two TOO short for it to look good) but boy- is this tutorial bookmarked! It was soooo easy and i can tell it's going to work out perfectly!
ReplyDeletewow, you look so great on camera! thank you for this tutorial, i will definitely be trying it. long hair does get uncomfy with a lot of heat.
ReplyDeleteExcellent tutorial! I really enjoyed your demo, it was like a friend showing me how to do my hair. My hair is a little too layered to braid but once it's a bit longer, I'm totally going to rock the Heidi braids! Wonder how it would look with bangs...
ReplyDeleteI've been rocking the milkmaid braids a lot lately. I cross mine in the back before pinning them up. It feels so great to get the hair off of your neck on an hot day.
ReplyDeleteGertie I love your lipstick! Which one is it? It look darker than normal? Also where are your glasses from? Have been looking for some like this for ages! xxx
ReplyDeleteMiss English Rose, it's Nars Red Lizard. You're right, it is a bit darker. My glasses are John Lennon brand - weird, huh? I like them because they're similar to Ray Bans but with a smaller frame. Oh, and cheaper. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! So excited to try it out!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!! This has totally inspired me to grow my hair again. You are lovely!
ReplyDeleteMelissa Jade - my hair is a bit too short to cross the braids properly in front, but it works nicely to have them meet slightly further back, on the crown or even halfway down your head (I used to do it like that when my hair was a lot shorter). I do this style all the time as it's great for keeping all my hair tidied away at work, but it still looks stylish. Thanks for the video!
ReplyDeleteI can not wait to try this up do on myself and my daughter, I always have my hair up in a boring granny bun, no offense to the granny bun, but it is worn out for me, and my daughter has such thing long curly hair I am always trying to contain it. So Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteLove the video and will be testing it out when I am at home and not potentially embarrass myself in front of my coworkers :-P
ReplyDeleteAlso, just a note, when I was in beauty school they told us to never put bobby pins in our mouths because there are no health codes in bobby pin factories (one teacher took a factory tour and there were cockroaches walking around on the bobby pins). Food for thought :-X
I did it several times! Thanks for the tute!
ReplyDeleteI just posted a photo (and a link to you) on my blog : http://galimamphigouri.canalblog.com/archives/2010/08/26/18897503.html
And, I wanted to say to you that I really love your blog and follow every post and tute (I'll do the Lady Grey Coat if I found the time, but it's not sure I will)
Thanks for everything.
