Here's what I read this week.
- OMG, Christina Hendricks caused such a stir at the Golden Globes in this dress (above) by Project Runway champ Christian Siriano! Lotsa people hated it, the Fug girls liked it, Cathy Horyn of the New York Times quoted an anonymous stylist that called Hendricks "big" and posted a distorted image that had people seething. I thought Big Fat Deal's reaction to the kerfuffle was the most measured and intelligent, personally. I also admit that I liked the dress. Sue me.
- The fabulous Mo'Nique won a Golden Globe for her role in Precious and spoke out about child abuse, but all some people could talk about was her leg hair.
- I'm not so pleased with Vivienne Westwood and her "homeless chic" collection.
- LOVED this little clip Big Fat Deal pointed out, in which a plus-sized chick is actually a sex symbol in a UK tv show.
- Like Dodai of Jezebel, I say EWWW to the notion that showing women laying down (and therefore sexually available) in clothing ads moves merchandise.
- I love Glossed Over's "Lowest Common Denominator" posts on Cosmo. That is all.
I love Girl Reporter Friday. Thank you, Gertie!
ReplyDeleteGirl Reporter Friday rocks! And, although I think it goes without saying, C. Hendricks is a fine figure of a woman, and a luscious confection in that dress!

Christina Hendricks is bloody hot. If I was going to sleep with a woman, it would definitely be her. Love the dress; it suits her perfectly.
ReplyDeleteOh that Vivienne Westwood collection is so tacky: it reminds me of the whole Derelicte fashion show in the movie Zoolander, only without any irony. Boo.
ReplyDeleteNice reporting.
ReplyDeleteI love the dress and I don't think she looks the least bit fat. It is sad if someone looks healthy and has curves that the fashion media interprets that as fat.
Shaven legs is an American cultural thing; in Europe the many women don't shave at all. When I was there the family I stayed with was aghast that I shaved because that was something only "women of the night" would do. It is only shocking to us because that is what our cultural has taught us.
However, this is one case where I won't blame the media but Monique herself. The Award show was in America, it would have behooved Monique to keep her long down down and not expose her legs an no one would have been the wiser or shaved because it was a special occasion to keep the focus on that special occasion and her cause instead of choice to have hairy legs (because maybe because she could get more free press by doing so?).
I LOVE that dress on Christina Hendricks. Pale orange/peach looks fab with red hair, particularly with her milky white skin.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I'm one of the people who thought the dress didn't look so great on her. I don't think it's as tragically awful as some people play it up to be, but it wasn't great. By no means am I calling Christina Hendricks fat, but given her (fabulous) curviness, I don't think she necessarily needs to wear a dress that "shows off" her assets. Her curves speak for themselves, there's no need to put her in something that specifically says "LOOK BOOBS." I haven't watched "Mad Men," but I've seen plenty of photos of Joan... She doesn't wear such revealing items, but she's still smoking hot.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I thought Christina looked fabulous. Great dress for her, a bit showy on the cleavage, but she looked somewhat like a redheaded Marilyn Monroe. Not so much in facial features, just the attitude of the picture. Love your linking different stories in one place.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Gertie. Christina rocked that look totally. I love a woman who knows what colors really work for her and who is not afraid to make the most of her curves. I thought she looked positively Rubenesque, and I mean that in the best possible way.
ReplyDeleteYeah I loved that dress on Christina Hendricks too- it's a dress if I saw it on a mannequin I'd think ew, no- but I think it's positively dreamy on her. (But then of course, what isn't she dreamy in.) All the flap over the "big" business put my teeth on edge, but seemed like transparent Mean Girls pot shots really. I figure they're all just as mesmerized by her as I am and just handling it in more of a talking-about-her-behind-her-back way than the moon-eyed girl-crush thing I've got going on.
ReplyDeleteAs for "The Book Club"- it showed up on Hulu and I just watched ("watched"- ie. listened, with glances up while sewing...) the whole thing again last weekend. It's nice that Hulu is bringing some of those British & Canadian series like Book Club, Green Wing etc etc that I got briefly into on some now-defunct .uk website and hadn't found another free way to access after it went away. Good fun.
I think I really like Girl Reporter too. Bring it on.
ReplyDeleteI am REALLY pissed off with some of the notes I read about Christina being 'BIG' and 'FAT' (even!), regardless of that, I also liked the dress, as it was something different but still a bombshell number for her.
As for the body hair, I hardly can grow anything, so yay for growing it all out, I'm waiting to be a mature woman soon so I can too!
Christina is edible in that dress. I want one for myself.
ReplyDeleteI think Christiana has a fabulous figure, but I don't actually like that dress on her. The colour wasn't great and it didn't flatter her bust (they looked like they were going to burst out, and not in a good way). I think darker, jewel toned colours are much nicer on her.
ReplyDeleteThose were the golden globes alright.
ReplyDeleteI just hate the dress, period. Reminds me of a bad 80s prom dress. And seems to me that with Project Runway, the designers resort to ruffles when they can't think of anything else to do. It's the fall of ruffles that makes it totally 80s, too. Ditch the ruffles, and I think I'd like it.
ReplyDeleteI also really like the girl reporter posts! As for my two pennies on Christina - she is a stunner but peach is neither pink nor orange and doesn't even exist on peaches.... I'd dye it midnight blue then put it back on her. Then people wouldn't notice that she wasn't emaciated and would just love her in that dress, even with the ruffles.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if not shaving your legs is a European thing really - I'm from the U.K and if I stepped out in a short skirt minus the razor then there would pretty much be the same reaction as if I'd done it in America. Not sure about Germany, I'm not really comfortable with doing it
ReplyDeleteto try out the responses, but despite certain national stereotypes which circulate mostly around France and Germany, I haven't seen anyone walk around with unshaven legs (mind it's Winter now, we're all hiding them under jeans or tights, I'll recap in Summer for you ;) ) I think there was a documentary on in the U.K years ago where a woman pledged to not shave for however long, and her boyfriend bloody broke up with her because he couldn't deal with the extra hair!! Prat. It's personal choice anyway - personally there's nothing I love more than smooth legs, but it's a pain in the arse to shave every day in the Summer, being a dark haired Welsh-Italian.
Speaking of being in Germany, I can't watch the Hulu thing! Noooo! How rubbish.
I think Christina looks fab and I wish I had a rack like that - I'm not familiar with Mad Men, but I've seen her mentioned a lot in the blogosphere.
The only thing that concerns me a bit about that dress is that it doesn't appear to be holding her bust straight. It looks lopsided. Could be the draping or perhaps the angle of the photos, but I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteI thought she looked like a cake topper. Now, last night, she wowed. Completely.
ReplyDeleteThese are all great, I enjoyed them all!

These round ups are great. Interesting to see you reference The Book Group (the clip didn't work for me as you can only access it in the US). I wonder which actress it is - I have googled the programme and not sure I see a plus size woman in any of the pics! I like the fact that people are quite real on British TV!
