Bouffant Shower Cap! and more Retro Hair Accoutrements

Readers, I was looking for a fancy turban in which to wrap my pin curls, and I came across this wonder of a retro product that I felt I absolutely must share with you. It's a shower cap intended for bouffant hairdos. (I imagine its conical shape would also come in handy for keeping your beehive dry.) It's referred to as a shower dome. A SHOWER DOME!!! I'm practically speechless. Did you know such magnificence even existed? You should probably buy one or five of them while they're still on the market, and you can do so here.

Now, I should state for the record that I love shower caps. I only wash my hair twice a week, so they are essential. I don't require a DOME however, so I go with this more understated look. Love the flowers!

I did come across a turban, which is what I set out to do in the first place. I think it's quite glamorous really, and would be fantastic for wearing over my pin curl set while I sleep. Doesn't this model really work it? I just imagine her busting out into "Sunset Boulevard" at any moment.

And once you've purchased a bouffant hair dome and a terry cloth turban, there's really no turning back. You might as well also throw in one of these stylish rain bonnets to keep your 'do dry in inclement weather.

And I just absolutely must leave you with another image of the hair dome. Enjoy!

  1. Yeah, because when you're walking naked in the rain you sure don't want your hairstyle to be mussed up.

  2. Gertie,
do you think the small round caps are waiting to grow into the domes and say, "We come from France?"

I didn't know you could still buy them.

  3. I love this! And how about vintage-style swim caps, like what Esther Williams wore. I wonder if they still make them. Would you wear one? I would!

  4. The dome cap is hilarious. The make-up protector hood is terrifying however...

  6. I want a dome just for the ridiculous amount of fun we'd have with that in my house - thanks for that pic! I suppose I could also get a beehive done to justify the purchase...

  7. My mother and her sisters still use shower caps. I love the dome!! I've never seen one like that, but then my mother never had a bee hive or a bouffant.

You find the greatest kitschy stuff, Gertie!

  8. Nathalie, THANK YOU for that link to the petal caps! They are just fantastic and I would absolutely wear one. Love the pic of Karen Elson sporting the pink one in Vogue.

Also, that site sells sleep caps! Look at this cute one with the little buttons.

  9. Not only was I aware of their exsistance, I have owned one for years! The one I have included a little ring, which you can slip over the top of the dome and slide down to reduce the volume, depending on the size of your 'do.

I wash my hair once a week and couldn't live without a proper shower cap.

When I doobie-wrap my hair or set it on rollers I usually put an old pair of pantyhose on my head, and then wrap a bandana around it to keep everything secure and comfy. I do that because I live alone though. I couldn't bear for my lover to have to look at me like that, so I believe I'll have to investigate getting a glamorous turban.

btw, I really like the idea of the makeup protector hood, but I have a hard time believing that it would prevent M.A.C. Russian Red from smirching up the inside of my blouses.

  10. I us vintage scarves for covering my pincurls at night. that way you can adjust how tight they are and they are so fun and pretty.

I myself have never been a fan of the turban. even as a "hat style" of the late 20s-40s. I just dont prefer the way it looks

Teehee, you and goingungracefully make me smile because you seem to say you shower everyday!

Over here, most people only do that in the summer...

I love the caps though! I used to have one for after gym lessons in winter, so I wouldn't have to go out with my hair wet...

  12. I have a 40's hairstyle book and it tells you how to make a turban. i will see if I can dig it up and send the instructions to you. I also happen to be knitting a turban and it is pretty easy and quick. The pattern is a vintage one from the V&A. you can find it on ravelry.

  14. I have a bouffant shower cap, like goingungracefully talked about. Rain caps? You betcha. I once saw an elderly lady wearing the platic rain cap IN THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE. Not sure why. Swim caps can be cute and IF I were a water-bug, I would most definitely wear one.

OK--now, how about SNOODS? They were a big deal. I think they are essential to your vintage headgear. I hope you do a post about them.

  15. Be careful of wearing too thick of a turban over your pincurls while you sleep, though - it can make your hair take a LOT longer to dry! (If you're doing a wet set) I have really thick hair that takes forever to dry, so I am always wary of this.

I usually prefer to go with a lightweight vintage scarf, or I have a couple that I made out of organza - keeps everything in place, but you can still get some air circulation.

  16. I'm thinking these dome caps would pair quite nicely with the equally pointy rocket bras from back in the day. Now *that* would be a fun ensemble to prance around the house in.

  17. I'm calling Marge Simpson to let her know we have found a shower cap for her!

  18. When I was a youngester, my mother went to the beauty shop to have her hair done in a curl/set. It was then sprayed with heavy duty hair spray. The set had to last a week so she would wrap her head in long strips of toilet tissue and then a net bonnet to keep the curls in place. I always called it "helmet hair" as you could have prevented a head injury wearing the wrap over the hairsprayed hair.

your blog is a lot of fun. will have to spend some more time here.
i see you are a children's book editor. have you worked on anything you really loved?

  20. I love the models' faces for these sorts of products. They must know how ridiculous they look, but their professional model training means it's covered up with a glazed smile.

I also like the stylish bit of hair hanging out of the 'normal' showercap. Surely this completely defeats the point!?

  21. I love the swimming caps with the fake bangs poking out the front myself- you real hair stays dry but you also have a cute little row of curls along the front. Win/win!

I never heard of a shower dome. Genius. Sheer genius.

  22. I saw 'bouffant shower caps" - no fancy shower domes - for sale in several towns in Alabama, next to the ultra super giant cans of Final Hold hairspray at the "variety stores". Bless their hearts.
