Retro Wardrobe Essentials on BurdaStyle

This week on BurdaStyle, I channeled my inner style guru and listed the five retro pieces that are essentials in any wardrobe. Stop by to see if you agree with my choices!

Check the BurdaStyle Blog every week for my guest post on vintage sewing!

  1. I agree with all of the pieces that you mentioned in the Burda article. Like you, I enjoy vintage styles, but don't want to look like I'm in a costume.

  2. I don't mind looking a little costume-y, but maybe that's just my taste! I do agree that these make for some basic and very versatile pieces. I'm still looking for a portrait blouse pattern though - I can't seem to find any modern equivalents (or even vintage copies).

  4. Love the high waisted pencil skirt and the sheath. What pattern did you use for the sheath?

  5. Fantastic post on Burdastyle, you do make chic look so effortless!

Your mention of the sheath dress with the self-fabric belt (FAB-ulous, btw) sparked a supplies question. It looks like the buckle is also self-covered, do you have a reliable source for fabric-covered buckle kits? They seem to be getting as rare as hen's teeth these days, and I've only got a couple that I snagged at thrift stores, and one that my mom found for me somewhere. Any suggestions?

  6. I hear you Miss Emmi - I REALLY want the portrait blouse pattern as well. Surely some talented person can draft a pattern up....?

  7. Wonderful post. Mine is a 1952 wrap dress with flared skirt and cap sleeves, works wonderful even now. They were "housedresses", but in today's relaxed society, w ork well in most day situations. They are also forgiving on the fuller figure, especially after pregnancy.
