Now I just adore this fabric combination (thanks, Catherine!), but is this the project for it? I mean, I obviously must make something out of this, but perhaps it should be something else - a skirt perhaps? Or how about this simple sheath with a lace overlay from February's issue of Burda World of Style?
So, I'm now almost 100 percent decided on the blue fleurs for the overskirt/wiggle dress combo ensemble. Thanks to all of your excellent feedback, I think I should just take the plunge and go for it. After all, this is an experiment. If it doesn't work out, the fabric will still be in a lovely rectangular shape with which to make something else (since the overskirt is your basic dirndl shape).
It also has a really pretty scalloped edge, which I think will give this a nice, finished look. And the dress and jacket in electric blue shantung will be an excellent addition to my work wardrobe.
Seems a solid choice for this pattern, right?Seriously, this is it. Decision time!
Go for it. And please sew all weekend, so I can see it on here soon!
ReplyDeleteSorry, it probably wouldn't take you all weekend to sew that - I was basing it on my skill level.
Go, girl, go! I love the ivory and black combination, and that Burda pattern is sweet.
ReplyDeleteI have always favored the floral for the blue, so now I can't wait to see it!
OOOOooo. I had exactly that same thought of Audrey's Sabrina dress when Catherine mentioned the black over ivory. I'm looking forward to seeing the blue number too.
ReplyDeleteThat illusion over the ivory is stunning.
ReplyDeleteHurrah! I can't wait! But of course, we have to wait because the Sheath dress is not complete yet. By the way, making my slips from your tutorial this weekend.
ReplyDeleteCatherine's Ivory version was a fantastic idea! I first thought this ivory set would be very cute with the evening dress pattern (plus this would be a fantastic tribute to the Sabrina dress), but I guess the fabric would be too crisp.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, after browsing into Sarai's archives on sweet Sassafras, I was also ready to suggest you to use one of the overskirts fabric with a dress fabric to make a "Peggy Hunt-like" Macaron version (but thought that this, too, was not very relevant fabric-wise...).
I'm glad to know you'll make something out of such a lovely blue fabric!
Ha, Dodz, I think this would take at least a weekend--we're talking a dress, skirt, and a lined jacket here! But it's not going to be this weekend since I have family in town and plan to spend the whole weekend doing fun things in the city! And yes, the red satin sheath is next on the line-up of projects. :)
ReplyDeleteCarlotta--interesting idea on the evening dress. That might be a possibility! I don't think the fabric would be too stiff at all.
I was just coming to suggest the evening dress too! I mean, if you're making an evening dress why not go all-out?
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for the blue!! Can't wait to see the finished product. Have a good weekend!
You are going to need to set up a lot of evening dress events!! You will have all of these beautiful dresses! I just can't wait to see them once you have finished. I hope you have fun with family this weekend!
ReplyDeleteGo blue. It's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteSo the adequate word is 'stiff'? Sorry about that, reading in English is usually OK, but I'm sometimes lost with technical words, and finding the adequate adjective or translation for sewing terms or fabric can be quite difficult...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I would like to apologize for any former and future grammar or vocabular fault in my comments!
Your English is lovely, Carlotta! And you used the correct word--I just quoted you incorrectly!
ReplyDeleteWow the ivory backing really does make a difference!! Looks lovely!! Good luck with the next project!! xx
ReplyDeleteGertie- I can't wait to see it on you. I bet it will be lovely! Presently I am in love with royal blue and working on a few blue garments. A vintage jacket/dress and blouse. It is taking forever...
ReplyDeleteHave a fun time this weekend!
OOOhh wow! The Sabrina version would look so, so lovely, I think it would work perfectly! The blue is going to be so striking though, can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteIt would be so wonderful with the black ivory in the evening gown! (full length I hope?)
ReplyDeleteLove "Sabrina", and what girl would not like to look like the beautiful Audrey Hepburn? =)
Have a lovely weekend!
What about your current sheath dress? It would be killer gorgeous on that lace fabric.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm flattered that you liked it so much... but I should have known it was deep in my subconscious somewhere... I just named my third daughter Audrey! Isn't "Sabrina" SUCH a chic movie? And the dress! Oh. my. heavens.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I think that combo with the Burda dress would be divine. Great choice!
