Sick of these posts yet? Don't worry, I think we're coming to a conclusion. Thanks to commenter Catherine's brilliant suggestion, I tried the black lace/ivory illusion on an ivory fabric rather than a black fabric. I thought the effect was rather stunning, and reminiscent of certain lovely ingenue's iconic dress in Sabrina.
Now I just adore this fabric combination (thanks, Catherine!), but is this the project for it? I mean, I obviously must make something out of this, but perhaps it should be something else - a skirt perhaps? Or how about this simple sheath with a lace overlay from February's issue of Burda World of Style?
Wouldn't that be stunning?
So, I'm now almost 100 percent decided on the blue fleurs for the overskirt/wiggle dress combo ensemble. Thanks to all of your excellent feedback, I think I should just take the plunge and go for it. After all, this is an experiment. If it doesn't work out, the fabric will still be in a lovely rectangular shape with which to make something else (since the overskirt is your basic dirndl shape).
It also has a really pretty scalloped edge, which I think will give this a nice, finished look. And the dress and jacket in electric blue shantung will be an excellent addition to my work wardrobe.
Seems a solid choice for this pattern, right?Seriously, this is it. Decision time!
Go for it. And please sew all weekend, so I can see it on here soon!

OOOOooo. I had exactly that same thought of Audrey's Sabrina dress when Catherine mentioned the black over ivory. I'm looking forward to seeing the blue number too.

ReplyDeleteCatherine's Ivory version was a fantastic idea! I first thought this ivory set would be very cute with the evening dress pattern (plus this would be a fantastic tribute to the Sabrina dress), but I guess the fabric would be too crisp.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, after browsing into Sarai's archives on sweet Sassafras, I was also ready to suggest you to use one of the overskirts fabric with a dress fabric to make a "Peggy Hunt-like" Macaron version (but thought that this, too, was not very relevant fabric-wise...).
I'm glad to know you'll make something out of such a lovely blue fabric!
Ha, Dodz, I think this would take at least a weekend--we're talking a dress, skirt, and a lined jacket here! But it's not going to be this weekend since I have family in town and plan to spend the whole weekend doing fun things in the city! And yes, the red satin sheath is next on the line-up of projects. :)
